This is a little off topic but i have a question. The wife's 91 grand waggy uses a starter like this:
I've had a lot of luck with this design which is similar to what's used on the 4.0.
My 83 scrambler with a 360 from a wagoneer uses the old, massive gm style starter like this:
Anyone know if they are interchangeable? Would it matter if the wagoneer was auto (TF727) and my CJ has a manual (nv4500)??
The old style starter is Ford, not GM. its nearly identical to the one off a big block Ford (I think they may actually be the same part number)
The wiring is different. The mitsubishi starter has the solenoid on the starter. So you just give it the big 12V wire. The Ford starter uses the Ford solenoid on the passenger side fender.
The Ford setup is far better IMHO, as it has none of the hot start issues that plague solenoid on starter setups (Which GMs are known for).
The Mitsubishi starter is the same starter that is used in the XJ, it can replace the Ford style starter BUT, you have to have the proper flywheel. For the earlier model 360 w/auto it's easier because you can use the flexplate from the late model Wagoneer. For your CJ, you have to use the flywheel from a manual transmission XJ 4.0 but you need to have it balanced for the 360. Too much money and effort for a starter swap. You could go with a high torque mini starter offered by several aftermarket companies, but they usually run $200-400.
Not only will you have to swap out the flex plate, but you will also have to change out your wiring. The big huge "Ford" style starter needs an external solenoid. The "Mitsubishi" starter has the solenoid attached to the starter, and thus only needs a separate relay.
The wiring is easy. For the Ford to Mitsubishi swap, you just keep the same starter solenoid on the fender then run a jumper at the starter from the big cable to the little terminal. That is also the 'hot start' solution on the GM's.
Oh, and Stuka, the Ford style AMC starter has a different nose cone than any of the Ford applications. It's AMC specific.
No need to go through all that trouble. Go to O'Reilly Auto parts and buy a new, not remanufactured starter. They are a modern winding/coil style and crank way better than the old ferd starters. Good for like 100 more cranking RPM.
If you are referring to the Ford style starter, O'Reilly doesn't off a new one only reman. You can get a lifetime or a one year warranty and there is a $7 difference in the two.

Dang! It appears they dropped WPS as a supplier. There still available through Rock auto.
