Early FSjdoor weather stripping

Post by 1969 dream wagon »

Has anyone found something that is close to original for door weather stripping. I want to attach it to door like original and not pinch weld. Thanks

I realize this is an old post, but same problem here. Wanted to post photo but either can't or don't know how.

So, this is something a few people have talked about online. I have searched to the point where I am pretty sure I have seen everything on the internet about this question. I have come to the conclusion that original, pre 1971 door seals are not an option. No one makes them and no one makes door seals of this style at all.

That being said, I have found that the door openings and doors are exactly the same regardless of model year. The best option for door seals is Team Grand Wagoneer. They make late model door seals that will work with the early model door openings. The early model FSJs have a trim piece on the door opening pinch weld and the door seal is on the door itself. Late model FSJs have a door seal on that trim piece pinch weld. Again, the body door opening and the door are exactly the same on both early and late model FSJs. The best solution is using the late model door seals on the door opening pinch welds. This necessitates a late model door step trim piece but those can be found in the junkyard.

If you have a chance to look over on IFSJA, checkout KaiserJeeps' "Another 70 Wagoneer Build" thread. He has sourced some door seal that is nearly identical to the one originally installed on the 70. Here's a link to the post: http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showpost ... count=1807

Hope that helps!

I checked this out. It looks like he is putting the weather strip on the door (which would be the original spot) but I cant quite tell. Do you know if this is the case?

Yes, I believe he was applying it to the doors as it was originally installed. I couldn't find it in any of his photos though to confirm.

Yeah, he was applying to the doors. The profile is the auveco 16890. It's not actually correct for the front edge of the back doors but I used it and it works. Credit to Kaiserjeeps for the pn.Image

Also there's some filler pieces you'll have to make. I did the ones on my front doors with generic squared profile weatherstripping.Image

For the tailgate I needed a bigger profile on the sides, used Metro LP-80S which is similar.Image

I'm sorry to drag this out from the depths of time. But can anyone confirm if this method of mounting the door seals to the doors themselves will work on a later 76 2 door Chief?

I have tried quite a few different solutions with the pinch weld mounted style seals (BJs and aftermarket) and just cannot get anything to fit well. I like the idea of mounting the seal to the door.

I may just order some auveco 16890 to see how well it will work.

I’d like to put something on the door too, so the water doesn’t make it into the door jambs. Like the newer cars
