Heat riser valve - donut gasket or not?

Post by Milktruck »

Hey folks!

Putting a new heat riser valve on the GW and want to know if there is supposed to be a donut gasket that lives between the bottom of the HRV and the downpipe. Or is the connection is direct HRV to pipe? The downside end of the HRV is tapered like it would be a direct fit. I see in the service manual what appears to be a gasket, and if I reference ones being sold on sites like Team Grand Wagoneer there seems to be one in the kit. The taper to taper fit does not make sense to me though. Thanks for the help.

If the pipe is flared, and the heat riser fits into it like it were a doughnut gasket, then no additional gasket. Steel on steel is what the factory did after the mid 70s. For a while they used a steel doughnut in place of the old fiber doughnut. If you have a drawing or kit with the doughnut gasket, it's there to cover the earlier years when the gasket was present.

Thanks. Seemed like the donut was extra to my setup.
