Torqueflight 727 Fluid Capacity Discrepancy

Post by brandtjohnd »

Hopefully this will save you a little headache...

I needed to drop the transmission pan on my 89 Wagoneer. Sealed it back up and went to refill with Transmission fluid. I grabbed my Haynes manual to check the capacity. It stated ~8.5 quarts for a drain & refill and ~17 quarts with the torque converter. So i added 7 quarts so i could add more if needed. Ran the engine up to temp with the transmission in Neutral and checked the fluid level. The fluid ran up the dipstick about 10 inches. IT WAS WAY TOO HIGH!

I proceeded to remove ~3 quarts from the dipstick tube until the fluid level showed as correct on the dipstick. The vehicle is all good now.

I checked the TSM (page 21-59) today and found that the total fluid capacity is 17 PINTS including the torque converter. It looks like my Haynes manual is wrong...it states quarts instead of pints.

Maybe there are different versions of the Haynes manual that may have addressed this, but now you all know.

The hanes manual must be talking about a deep pan ? Because owning a ZJ the 42 and 46re are essentially a sibling or cousin of a 727 and the pans on them are deep.. I was kinda shocked how shallow the pan was on the 727.. The zj takes 7 quarts so a wagoneer with a shallow pan must take around 3 or 4.

tbh i thought sbout putting a deeper pan on the 727 i dont like the shallow pan but i suppose if its been fine for 130k miles ill leave it alone.

Total fluid capacity of a 46re in ny 5.9 zj i believe is around 14-16 quarts... So a 727 without overdrive and a shallow pan must be around 10 or 12 quarts

The Haynes manual is likely just wrong. Those manuals are written to cover as many different things as possible, and by design end up missing or misprinting a lot of details. That's not to say it's ever intentional or devious, just the nature of the beast. I have both a Haynes and Chilton for my truck, and honestly I haven't opened either one in at least a decade. The TSMs available for free are FAR better resources.
