Yet another oil filter help question, sorry

Post by tedlovesjeeps71 »

I've been searching via Tapatalk on here and going through Google on the mother site but after hours of wandering around (and occasionally sidetracked ) I can’t find a definitive answer. In fact, I’m probably more confused now.
So I know that some filters have drainback valves, some don’t. Some DBV filters work, some don’t. Some years of AMC motors are SAE thread, some are metric for the filter.
Ugh... my brain hurts. Lol!

So can anyone recommend the correct, known good oil filter for my 1991 wagoneer 360? Part number, brand..... thanks guys.

Go to Napa, get a Napa gold filter, done.

Napa filters are rebranded Wix filters, which are among the best out there. They use spring loaded ADB valves, and are of good quality. In fact on my old JK, they were the only filters that would prevent start up rattle. Every other filter would let the top end drain and the lifters would have to pump up again.

Can't speak for a '91 filter but the Napa gold or Wix both mine call for is a BIG turd.
They both rattled like hell on cold start.
So bad I actually swapped back to different brand.
This is the metric one PN#s 1626 or 51626 depending on Napa/Wix.

X2 on the wix Gold, on the 74 it was so bad, it even took away an hydraulic lifter... not too sure if the lifter was weak at 180K and over 20 years ago.

Using AC PF46 on the 85 with the metric specs.

In regards to the link above, that was admittedly the old design. Makes me wonder if certain ones had a design flaw back then. As they solved my startup issues.

So, I guess give the PF46 a try.

burried somewhere in the amcforum there is a mention of a Ford filter that is pretty good... for the amc engine... I'll try to find the link/ref.

For the older rigs with the standard thread it is PF 24, that is being used on the 74

Ford filter ref for the older engine I suppose....

http://theamcforum.com/forum/best-oil-f ... page3.html

I get mine from either Summit or Rock Auto and buy them in bulk so that the shipping cost is reduced. In the end, it is cheaper than buying locally even with the shipping and exchange rate.

I have been buying Motorcraft filters for my vehicles (4.6 Ford, 4.8 GM, 390 AMC). The anti-drainback supposedly works on these. The 390 has the filter adapter conversion so I can use the FL1A

another post

On my 390 rebuild I installed the Crown Automotive oil filter adapter (part# CWA-53007563AB) and using Motorcraft FL-1A oil filter.

and another post

The PH11 or equivalent are low volume and tough to say how long they've been on the shelf, so the anti-drain back rubber valve may have aged and not seal the best.

Best option is likely to go to your Jeep dealer, get the adapter used on later AMC engines that coverts from 13/16" to 3/4" thread.

Mopar adapter

Crown Equivalent

... then stop by you local Ford dealer and get an FL-1A filter.

Guys different filters depending on year for 360.
3 different ones IIRC
Isn't '91 the only year for the 3/4" SAE filter stud??

I picked up a Wix for the rig. I hope to get the oil changed this weekend. I'll let you know if I get the dreaded tappet noise on start up.

WTH?
So when I tried to post this thread, Tapatalk said it was unable. Didn't see it show up anyways as is likely to happen. Ugh! Sorry and thanks to everyone for the replies.

So what is the answer? Haha. I'm seeing ideas and suggestions, links and alternatives. Even the idea that my 91 has a one year only difference? Now I'm confused even more.
It’s time for an oil change and I’d like to get it done this weekend but don’t want to buy a “bad” filter. Now that I know this thread is alive I’ll keep looking in.

Well my 90 when i go to autozone advanced or nappa.. when i tell em my year and make all their fikters fit just fine.

But if the threading changed in 91.. i wonder would a oil filter from a 93-98 grand cherokee thread on it ? The filters are exactly the same size.

Try an oil filter for a 98 grand cherokee 5.9 liter. Or 5 2 liter

Im curious uf that woukd work.. im betting it would..

I have a purolator on my 360 right now i believe and i get rattling noise on startup all the time.. Ive tried napp filters and they are hit and mixx as well... so i dunno

Ted, Napa Gold filters are made by Wix for Napa, they have one that should be matched to yours, the master pack
https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/FIL1085MP
And regular gold
https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/FIL1085

They are really good filters with the spring valve, I use them on my 06 Commander, 03 Pilot, and just put one on my 70 Wagoneer. Hope they work for you.

Thanks for that. If Napa is made by WIX, why wouldn't a WIX be fine and skip the marketing?
I wish there was a way to look at a filter and see if it has the doohickey that is good. I imagine the filter has to be cut open to see it?

Yeah, not sure why it isn't available there as just Wix, the folks at Napa laughed and shrugged when we were talking about...maybe it's a distribution/labeling deal for Napa's inhouse brand. I think you would have to cut it open to confirm, unfortunately. But, there was a video in YouTube where some fella did exactly that with 5 or 6 brands to see which was best. I'll try to find it again.

I always buy the cheap [20-40w] diesel oil with zinc and on-sale filter. I had the noisey lifters too until I went to the heavier oil. IMO, the oil and filter dont matter [as long as they meet the OEM recommendation] as much as doing the changes on time [ every 6 months or 4K miles]. Im in Florida where its HOT all the time
