Hot Running 1986 FSJ

Post by spduffee »

Hi All,
I recently fixed my gauge (it had a wobbly post that I soldered). It works, I guess, and reads less than 220 ° , but I have always noticed how blistering hot it gets. Seriously, I open the hood after a 15 min drive and everything is on fire. The gauge never gets in the red. Is this a typical thing for FSJs? If so, what can I do to cool it down, or do I need to...?
Thanks!

Leaned on my radiator once.....once! :)

I just purchased my first less than a month ago but it does get hot under there. I'm in the process of a coolant flush, new 160 degree thermostat and replacing the heater hoses. My "before" is that it runs right at the 220 and if I try to go over 70 or up a hill, it starts to head into the hot zone until I back off.

I'm hopeful the new juice and thermostat help.

Lower temp thermostat won't make it run cooler, it'll just open earlier. Too early in the winter. Might not even warm up properly in cold weather.

You should keep the correct one in there.

Check it with a real gauge. Factory gauges are for "Indication Only".

Something like this can help you determine how hot the radiator is getting:

Not very expensive and can be used for other things Jeep related and around the house.

I used one to trace misfire, that exhasut was cooler than rest. Works good on finding out rad issues, if plugged runs cooler in that area.

X2, as Flint said, infrared or non-contact thermometer, our gauges are temperamental, check the upper and lower radiator hose temp as well to see if it is that radiator that is in need of service if the temp are too close to each other, a decent radiator will drop the temp a good 40 to 70F depending on outside temp.

What is the color of your coolant? murky brown or sort of greenish...

do you have a radiator fan shroud, our efficient is your viscous fan

Too much advance timing will make the engine run hot at higher rpm/speed as noticed by poster norjet
