32 tires fitment

Post by KAISER12 »

Hi, I would like to put 32X11,50 BFG A/T tires on 15X10 rims on a 1981 J10.
Do you think they fit with no lift ?
I actually run 31X10,50 BFG A/T tires

Thanks

32" tires on those wheels should fit without issue since the truck is a widetrack.

Good, so not rubbing problems for tires.
And what offset do you suggest me for 15X10 rims ?
I love to see tires that come out from the fenders, but they must be functional and don't rub

Offset will help keep your turn radius tight but may cause flare rubbing under suspension compression...so it's a toss-up.
I would stick with 4-1/2" backspacing & 2-2.5" offset with a 15x10 to fill the widetrack fenderwells nicely but not too far out there. The 11.5" tire won't have much of a sidewall taper on a 10" wheel so you should have a nice setup this way.

I would suggest that you remove one of the front wheels, raising the truck just high enough to remove it and measure the offset/backspacing for a baseline. Rotate the wheel so the studs don't line up with the lugnut holes and press the wheel against them. This would be around +1" offset from your current wheels. If that doesn't fill the fenderwell as much as you like, add a 1" piece of wood to add more offset. Once the tire and wheel are where you want them, measure the offset and add that to what your wheel currently has.
It's not that hard to get a close measurement. The hard part will be finding wheels in your size/bolt pattern with the right offset/backspacing.

Keep in mind that offset and backspacing are two different measurements...as shown in the image below.

Thank you very much for your infos :)
I know about the difference between backspace and offset, I prefer backspace measurement, it's more simple to use. :)
Sadly I can't get the right measurement in person because I have to order tires and wheels online.

I will note that personally I would not run those tires on such wide wheels. I would go with an 8" wheel, but thats me.

Most wheels intended for this era vehicle (ie: correct center bore, lug pattern, and stud size) will be listed with back spacing instead of offset. Be aware many "newer" style wheels are intended for newer vehicles with metric size studs, and have center bores that are too small.

I agree with Stuka regarding the tire/wheel widths.
I prefer to run a tire at least 2" wider than the wheel ie; 12.50 on a 10" or even more like my 12.50s on 8" wheels. Yeah, the sidewalls are pooched and there is a wiggle to it's walk on the freeway...but looks great and offroad aired down they have traction out the wazoo.

I want to use normal steel wheels, not modern ones, I think they fits good.

33x12.50's would be a better fit on 10's, at least in my experience, I shoot for rim width close to actual tread width.

33's on 8's for "looks" is perfect to me, good tread wear...

Unless your suspension is all sagged to death...yes, they should fit nicely.

What do you think is the better choice between a J10 or a CUCV J20 ?
I know J20 have better axles, better steering box and better transmission but is long bed only with a longer wheelbase...

The difference in wheelbase is almost invisible actually driving it, both on and off road. But I can tell you with 100% certainty that an 8' bed is 100 times more useful when you need your truck to be a truck. If I were in the market I'd look really hard at a CUCV J20 before I took a J10 over it.

The original tires were 31"-32" on these trucks to begin with. I run 33x10.50-15 on 15x7 rims and it works fine. I even went back to OEM replacement springs (and post mount trucks sat a little lower).

About dimensions, the J10 have the same lenght of 188,56 of the J200 and the J20 have the same lenght of 200,56 of the J300 ?

PS I have searched a lot on internet but it seems that J10/J20 lenghts are top secret...

The TSM is your best source of info. Any of the TSMs from '74 on will give the dimensions of the J10 and J20. There are several posted on the Tom Collins site www.oljeep.com - take your pick.

CUCV=Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicle.
The military adopted this acronym when it decided to purchase civilian vehicles instead of having special-purpose ones manufactured.
One fairly recent example is the M-1008-1028 CUCV series the military purchased in the 80s. They were Blazers and pickups with 6.2 diesels and 24vdc electrical systems.
J-trucks were purchased by the Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and Air Force. I'm not sure if the army ever bought them however.
In the 60s Wagoneers were purchased by the military branches as well as the CIA and State Dept.
