MSD Ignition Upgrade

Post by MadMax78 »

Ok. My Ignition box is on its way out. It is starting to leak so I figured I would upgrade it instead of just replacing it using MSD parts. I have searched for a complete parts list till I was cross eyed. Are the parts below all I will need in order to complete this? What am I missing? Can this be completed in a day by a noob? I want to make sure I have all of the correct parts before I start this so I don’t have to stop mid stride to get more parts. Probably should just replace the Ignition module and be done with it but where is the fun in that? Can I just install the MSD 6A now and do the rest later?

MSD 6A (pn: 6201)
MSD Blaster 2 TFI Coil (pn 8227)
MSD Cap-A-Dapt Cap & Rotor Kit (pn: 8414)
MSD Super Conductor Spark Plug Wires (pn: 35859) - or anything cheaper that is just as good
MSD to Mororcraft Wire Harness (pn: 8869)
NAPA Echlin TFI Ignition Coil Connector (pn: ICC1)

I've been looking for the same thing and I came across this site the other day. Seemed to be pretty helpful and thorough. Not all MSD components in the write up but should point ya in the right direction. http://www.grimmjeeper.com/J-Truck/tfi.html

All you need to start is the cable (8869) and the 6A module. Your factory coil, cap and wires will work ok with the 6A.

Then I'd get the rest of the parts from RockAuto and Summit or Jegs. The Summit (blue) or Jegs (yellow) generic silicon wires work well, and a Standard FD168 or Airtex 5D1138A cap with brass terminals should be fine. Get a generic adapter, like the Standard FD165, and a good rotor and you'll be set.

Guess it's too late there's a couple of things on the list to consider. One is the TFI coil will need a mount. If he buys the MSD 8869 he will not need the Napa ICCI piece.

Thanks for the tip Serehill. Didn't make it to the store. Wife had other plans. I did get my daughter to pick up a power steering belt and fluid. At least I can drive it to work tomorrow. :D I plan on getting the parts tomorrow.

No problem you can easily do this in one day. Good luck. Even dragging my feet I finished my J10 a couple of weeks ago in 4 hours.

Hey Serehill. I went with the 6A. Have not had a chance to install it yet. currently have a house full of guests and don't have the time. Want to do the Ammeter bypass as well. I found the pic below and want to copy it. I don't remember who it was that drew it up but I like the idea of a small fuse box.

That's the one I drew up off Serehill's advice.

Cool max I thought you fell off the face of the earth!!!!

The fuse box is a great idea. I just bought one of these for the j10. I'm setting up half on a relay off the ignition for keyed accessories. It's a split circuit. Stereo amps, fuel pump, radio, etc will go on the relayed half. Notice the red & red white is 2 different circuits. I'll use my label maker to ID the circuits. No doubt a little over priced. I used one last year in my boat & liked it.

Cool. I like that better than the 12 circuit blue sea fuse block I bought. It is bigger than I expected so I am looking for something smaller. Did get the Ammeter bypass done. Need one shorter cable but is done. Also went riding this weekend with the family and after all of the carb issues :banghead: I was approved to get Fuel Injection :-bd Already talking to Bill at Binder Planet. Now I just need to park the Jeep figure out how to set TDC easily and pull the distributor. I love learning new things. Just need the time to do it. Happy Days ahead :D

Finally! I have it installed and tested! :-bd Now to clean up the wiring before Monday or I wont make it to work. Now for the fuel injection and I will be set. Sounds better already. Do I need to gap the plugs for the MSD upgrade? I have the 6Aand the Blaster 2 coil.

I don't even know what my plugs are. Never pulled them since i've owned the old girl. I need new plugs and wires since i've done the ignition upgrade. So many parts piling up in the garage and not enough time to install them. Thanks Serehill.

Will the MSD upgrade and the ammeter bypass make the lights brighter? I have noticed that since these up grades all of my lights are much brighter. Every light from the exterior to the interior. I can see 10x better at night now. So glad I did these upgrades.

If the ammeter was going bad, bypassing it probably would make your lights brighter.

I'm glad no matter what. It was hard to drive at night at times it was so dim. Now it is 10 times better. Should have done it sooner. Almost have to turn them down they are so bright. Now to replace them all with LEDs. :D
