Ok guys, I know there are plenty of you who have done a TBI conversions, so I have some questions. The throttle body, distributor, and ECM are a gimme. I know that I have to have certain sensors. (knock, AIT, MAP, MAT, coolant temp, and so on) My top concern is a fuel pump. I am guessing an inline pump is in order, but I have no idea of what type. Also, an O2 sensor. Is it going to work with no converter? I know that when I worked at the dealership in the late 80's, we gutted a couple converters and always got an oxygen sensor code after because of the lack of heat. I also remember that during that time, we found a PROM chip that was used on cars shipped to overseas to delete the oxygen sensor because they were still running leaded gas. We found it because a friend of a friend was putting a tuned port engine in a boat. Water manifolds + oxygen sensor= bad news.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm tired of having the carburetor blues.
Thank you sir. I'll go check it out. I thought Jaber had done some EFI mods too. I am currently on the search for another LS/Vortec for a decent price. You know me, bigger is better. I'm comtemplating maybe a dual throttle body setup and getting that 427 ready to go.
I am working on a TBI install on my 360 now, my second attempt, the first on a 258 was successful; I used Binder Planet as a guide and Bill provided a lot of help with "user error" issues.
On the 258 I used an inline pump, similar to the pump Bill suggested but the part I used included clamps and other hardware, it was loud as crap bolted to the frame so I took the clamps off and trashed them.
I am using a 97 Blazer tank on my Cherokee with the factory fuel pump module, it's pretty quiet to me and solves the problem of not having baffles or a sump in the factory tank.
The O2 sensor is located upstream of the cat-con so it does not matter if you have one or not.
I use the standard Airtex E2000 pump mounted to the frame with a standard clear paper filter in front of it(suck side). They come with a foam sock that goes around the pump before you mount it to help with noise.
Thank you guys. I really appreciate all the input. I was figuring this should be pretty much a straight forward set up. I have already swapped in a small block 350. I plan to make a trip to pull a parts tomorrow to try and find my stuff.
Well, I guess Im moving into the 21st century now. I have scrapped my TBI adventure. With the help of Jim and Zack Willett and a friend Tony Mundy from work, we made a huge score from the local Pull A Parts. I just happened onto a 2000 GMC Yucon that had just been set on the stands with a 5.3 and 4L60 trans. Needless to say yesterday I was the envy of several hotrodders that walked by. Several hours, a few bruised and bloodied body parts, and the occasional choice word, I have a complete 5.3 with everything but the fuel pump and Zack and Jim have a nice transmission. Well, I guess its time for transplant #2.

Great. Your in good hands with Jim and Zack. You'll enjoy the "bump the key starts". Lol
I think so too. this may take me a little bit to figure out the wiring on this monster. Several trips to pull a parts for things I forgot. I forgot to get the ALDL plug under the dash.
I look forward to the LSx in my Cherokee too, but for now the TBI is worth the effort in spades. I am busy with projects inside but I just walked out and opened the door, turned the key and she fires up and purrs. I can't see how anyone would run a carb when even a 25 year old FI technology is so affordable and offers so much.
Im going to stick with my T176 for now. Should be able to pull the small block out and just set the LS in its place. Just got to find a flywheel for it. Was told the flywheel for a 4.8 or 6.0 will work. My nephew got a better deal than I did. He got a complete 5.7 aluminum block engine with everything for free.
Initially I bolted a SBC to the T177 in my CJ-7 but as I recall, I was going to need the 153 tooth flywheel from a TBI F-body to work with the CJ starter.
its a modified Lakewood I picked up for 75 bucks on Craigslist. there are some pictures of it on a thread I started called Project Low Buck Chevy Swap. As it goes, Im still under $1000 on the swap and Im going to sell the 350 that I pull out. Im looking at it like this. I paid 200 for the small block and 250 for the ls plus 110 for the harness, ECM, alternator, and starter.
