Swap confusion

Post by jarrod.romero.94 »

I've searched and can't find a definite answer on this, I just picked up a 2000 cherokee that I plan on yanking the motor out of to swap it into the 'ol j10. Every thread and walkthrough I've found on the 4.0 swap talks about using the auto trans from the donor but I'm wanting to keep the t176. I know it's possible with an obdI ecu, but what about the obdII? If there is already a thread that I skipped over on this, feel free to let me know. Thanks in advance!

Check the cylinder head and make sure it isn't casting #0331.
After that, maybe source a computer for the same year but manual tranny jeep.

What would be wrong with 0331?

0331 in last few year 4.0s were bad castings. They crack between cylinder 3&4. Ask me how I know or Google it.

In my case this (rust colored area)

Turned into this:

Yeah, that's the block cracked in multiple places.
Did this motor come out of an XJ?

Is their antifreeze in the oil? Have you torn it down yet?

When you pull the valve cover, check carefully. If you see the crack in the head, it's toast.
Depending on how much they drove it with coolant in the oil, the bottom end may be done too. Coolant washes the bearings. Maybe you could go cheap and just replace all bearings, find a non-0331 head, and have some luck. Whatever you do, good luck. I sure wasn't expecting all my work when mine happened.

If it is cracked, I've got a buddy with a spare head laying around, not sure of the casting number on it either but maybe the gods will bless me with at least one good head ImageImage all else fails, ill just rebuild the 4.2

If you want to keep the coil pack on plug setup you'll need another 0331 (horrible idea! Though ones stamped with TUPY are supposed to not have this issue as they were cast in a different country), find a 0630 or 7120 from a TJ or grand Cherokee, or buy one of the aftermarket options.
You can use an older head, go back to a distributor and coil which may make a stand alone computer easier?
