Powermaster 7294 alternator

Post by Fire1 »

Im thinking about upgrading my stock alternator on my 1982 360 V8 Cherokee with the Powermaster 7294. I'm in Australia and can get it from summit for $119 plus $50 shipping. The stock alternator is about 70 amps (I think) and the Powermaster is 100 amps. My stock alternator has a twin belt pulley. My wiring seems to be in reasonable shape and I'm not planning on installing a winch or other power hungry components. Maybe I'll add some spot lights down the track.

Will the dash amp meter cope with the 100 amps?
Is the 7294 a direct bolt on replacement?
Will the twin pulley fit?

Thx

Is the CS144 or CS130 alternator a viable and locally available alternative for your platform and location?

HI . I have 2 fsjs and I am running a powermaster 12 si in both 1982 Cherokee 1990 GW . The 1982 I did amp meter bypass. 1990 did nothing . you will need pulley from your old alternator . Very good choice . Bolts right in

Even though you don't have any high draw electronics I suggest an amp meter bypass as well. If you leave the lights on for a while, or do a lot of cranking to get it started the alternator will push out the higher Amps until the battery is back up to charge.

I have used the Power Master Single wire [internal regulator] and the bearings went bad after 2 years. I was going to get it rebuilt with better bearings just havent gotten around to it. Maybe it was just a Monday build or they are built with cheap bearings.
