1962 j-200 Thriftside Father & Son 4.0 AW4 D300 Project

Post by 66stepside »

After some disappointing news about a project that never will be, it's good to have my trusty angle grinder back! I was hoping I would still recognize her; I do (about 1/3 of her anyway):

LOL, you would not enjoy watching me build then. I have one exactly like it (4&1/2") that I use 7" cut-off wheels on. Only got my thumb once...

ROFLMMFAO.

The guard is in the bag. BUT I do work without it as/if/when a cut requires it. Precision is everything. Sometimes you walk the razor's edge without a net, sometimes you don't. Kinda like life in general, eh?

I have a 'mondo' vintage aluminum angle grinder that uses a huge 10+" disc, that one is FUN. I mostly use it for polishing da bits O' chrome.

Ironically, the only time I've been bit was when I had the guard on with a wire brush attachment using the 4.5" grinder. It was also one of the few times I was not wearing gloves. Good times, good times. :-bd

Brake upgrade looks good. I did the same thing on mine, although I ended up using stock fsj brackets to bolt the booster to the firewall. I had looked at the same setup you used and wondered how well it would match up. Yours looks like it was meant to be!

Thanks!

I noticed the set up on yours and that actually gave me the idea to reuse this one (leftover from my FrankenJeepster fail) on this project. I thought it was important to step up to a modern booster unit with the Dodge D150 axles under it. Mine is designed for the CJ, so the linkage needed to be trimmed and I still have to figure out a boot set up to keep heat and smells from the engine bay from seeping into the cab. All in all, with the repetitive install-mod-remove-mock up-mod again cycle, it took about 4 hours, or so, to complete. I just hope the six banger fits with plenty of clearance as the manifold is on that side.

It would have probably taken longer to adjust and mod, but 62Thriftside was there to help- a second set of hand is nice this time around.

We flipped the cab onto it's back and I wire brushed the belly of the beast.

While I am prepping the belly for truck bed liner, someone is clearing the cab on the 62 so they can be swapped.

Someday I'd like to weld in a small window cab on mine. Or just locate a small window cab!

I like the looks of the small window cab, but I love the rear slider option for the wider windowed rigs. Once 62's rig is done, it'll be interesting to see and feel the difference in coolness/hotness over the differing seasons.

I did toy with the idea of using a Chevy small window insert as I have seen slider options for that, but everyone wanted an arm and a leg for chevy parts.

Maybe we can keep the Cherokee AC and not have to worry about how hot the cab gets.

I think today we'll get the cab off the 62 and over the holiday break swap them out (contingent on the frame prep and paint, of course).

Subsequently, the floor of the doner has been painted with epoxy paint, then stayed with 2 coats of bedliner material.

This stuff is the easy part. Mocking up the engine-tranny combo and wiring will be the hardest for me. Slow and steady.

I did have to dust off the ol salamander heater to bring the shop up to temp for the paint. I haven't used it in many years, I am glad it is still working just fine.

Well, here we are as of today. I used the panel's 60/40 split seat in the cherokee parts rig as a driver's seat.

Image

I took the snow tire/rim combo off the cherokee XJ and put them on the TJ, then snagged a set of free wheels on the CL and put them on the XJ. I like it when a plan comes together

But, here's the real progress:

With any luck and some time of the upcoming holidays, the frame with get prepped for paint and painted. The. The prepped cab will get put on and bolted down. Then the real fun begins.

Frame looks real good. In the last pic, what is the mounting plate on the bottom side of the driver side of the frame? I just don't recognize it for some reason. On the free CL wheels...I keep hoping someone out there will decide to rid themselves of their 80s Outlaw I's with a 5x5.5 pattern for my 73 but it just doesn't seem to happen!?! :P

That looks like the bottom bracket for the Y style Dana 18/20 crossmember. Our later rigs use the familiar U style.

Sorry for the drive-by hijack.

I don't know about Y style, I just have always called it a transmission crossmember mount.

The early ones had welded in support brackets for the cross member, the later models had a bolt in version for awhile.

Yeah, the frame is solid. Surface rust only- and mountains of dirt, caked on grease and whatever else life has thrown at it. The 2wd T-98 has a pretty trick stabilizer bracket on it, too.

I hope you find your free tires, mine are bald on rusted rims- I hope yours aren't bald on rusty rims when you get them, lol.

The frame under the cab area was prepped and painted. I ordered a set of new body bushings from BJ's and now we're ready to move the new cab onto the frame.

That was a bit easier than we thought it would be. Done.

Next up: paint the dash, and under the dash area on the firewall and install the drive train. Sounds simple enough.

Thanks. We're enjoying this, too.

We're also a bit ahead of schedule for once. With the unusually warm weather, we were able to get the inside area of the firewall sanded, minor surface rust treated and then painted:

I also sanded and prepped the dash for paint. I'll be hitting up KC Auto Paint this week for reduces and primers for the dash and glove box.
