83 Wagoneer in DFW

Post by Matt24601 »

Just picked up a new project last Tuesday.

I used to have an '86 when I was younger. Paid $1600 for it, never did any work on it, and basically just ran it until it died. It had special features like dying while turning too sharply, continuing to run when you turned it off and took the key out, and getting about 60 feet to the gallon. I still loved it. This project will either end up being my 14 year old son's car when he turns 16, OR if I get it decent enough, I will probably commandeer it and he can drive our Suburban.

I bought the Jeep off of eBay. We had been looking around at different Jeeps (really had my mind set on a CJ-8, but they're just too damned expensive) and when I saw that it was in Houston I put a bid in. Not real serious but somehow ended up winning.

Image

Anyway I get down there to pick it up and as we're going over it at the "dealership" I notice a bunch of fluid splattering on the pavement while it's idling. We pop the hood and see a jet stream of coolant coming out of a pea sized hole in the thermostat housing. The salesman can see that I'm trying to decide how much of a headache I want to bite off with this truck so he drops $200 off the price and we have a deal.

Backyard projects have kept me away from working on it this last week, but every time I step out the front door and see it there I get a little excited. The kids love it, they think it's some kind of prehistoric car out of the Flinstones (not that they even know what the Flinstones are).

Well, when I say I haven't worked on it since I got it it's a bit of an exaggeration. I haven't done anything "important" to it yet. I couldn't resist the fix-it urge so I took out the air cleaner and cleaned it up.

It started like this

Image

After trying to hammer out the dents, hitting it with the wire wheel, and some rattle can color, it now looks like this:

I can't really get into how it drives until I get the new thermostat housing in. Ordered from Autozone a couple of days ago.

The body looks excellent and interior quite decent. I love that thick carpet. Nice work on the air cleaner, especially in keeping those flapper parts from being black. Cool!

Looks great, I would try to save the paint no matter what you do with the woodgrain.

Don't forget to get a new gasket and thermostat while you're at it.

Nice work. Did you replace the seal/ gasket on the air cleaner lid? If so what did you use? Getting ready to do mine and the seal is pretty flat and dry.

I was actually planning on just running a bead of RTV sealant or silicone in there. Haven't done it yet.

Picked up the new thermostat housing along with gasket and thermostat yesterday. I'll try and get it in tomorrow.

As for paint, I don't know. The woodgrain vinyl will definitely go as it is mismatched and in pretty rough shape. Replacement kits are pretty expensive and I can think of many Jeep fixes/upgrades that I'd rather spend that money on. For now my top two priorities are: 1)Reliable daily driver 2)AC. After that it's all about looks and fun.

So, I'm thinking a replacement was way overdue.

You can see the hole near the bolt hole in front of the old thermostat housing where the stream of coolant came shooting out of when I was originally looking to buy it.

Anyone know the part name or number for the White Arrow? I noticed that one of the stems (the red star) has broken off.

I believe it switches the vacuum advance from manifold to ported vacuum. Most people just connect the vacuum advance to manifold and be done with it.

So, if you look in the pic above you see that there is a threaded "block off screw" in where the broken part would mount. I can tighten that threaded screw up and just run the vacuum lines differently? Would I lose any functionality?

As I remember it it switches from ported to manifold vacuum via temperature. ....I think the theory was if it was running too hot it would retard the timing. Not needed you should be fine with just manifold vacuum.

Someone please correct me if I am remembering this wrong.........it's happened

I was pulling the carpet out of the back and I ran into these two stickers.
Question: Anyone know what color they originally were from the factory? Mine are sort of an orangeish red with some pink in the corners so I assume they were red to begin with?

You can run straight to manifold vacuum if you cant find one in a junkyard. The switch that actually moves is likely long broken anyway. One of the best things you can do is remove as much vacuum stuff as you can. It never works right after being in the vehicle for so long. In some cases it never worked right when new...

Thermostat and thermostat housing replaced. Flushed the coolant system. While idling I noticed some light smoke coming from around the passenger side manifold. Sort of down where one of the spark plugs is.

Here's a cell phone video of the smoking area. Not the best quality but you can get an idea of where it is coming from.

I noticed this duct taped up under the AC vents when I was poking around the radio area.

Question: What is this? it looks like a trailer brake or something. The Jeep does have a factory tow hitch installed on the back.

Found this wiring harness/plug while trying to decipher the wiring mess that the previous owner made with their flea market radio install.

Question: What is this supposed to connect to?

Too many wires for a brake controller and no adjustment dials visible. AMC did offer some rediculsdly over priced high end stereos in the early 80s. Look for part #. May be able to track down. Wire harness is for an aftermarket stereo.
