1978 J10 Project moved from IFSJA...5.3L swap with QT!!!

Post by msh227 »

J10 is in its home for now. It just fit, I had to block open my manual garage door for it to pass.

I am having a slight running issue. It seems to be sluggish upon starts and then clears and seems to idle fine. For example today it started immediately and sounded fine. I left it run for a bit and moved it into garage and shut it off. Checked the fit inside the garage and decided to move it slightly. When I went to start it took 3 attempts to fire. Almost like it isn't getting fuel. I'm using an Ls1 external pump from Speedway Motors. I know a few others are using the same pump. Has anyone had a similar issue???

A few pictures...

Check out the app dash command for your phone, connects to the PCM via an odb2 adapter. Real time info from all the sensors

Have you put a fuel gauge on it? See what pressure is at key on. Cycle it a few times and see what it builds to. It should be 50-60 psi. Then turn the key off and watch for a drop in the pressure. You will get some drop initially, but after the initial drop, if it drops several pounds every minute or two then you either have a bad regulator, leaking injector or leaking pump.

If all of these are ok then connect a scan tool and check codes. Low or no voltage to the cam sensor will cause this same starting/running issue. It will still start and run with out the cam sensor but it will be slow starting at times.

If I were to put money on it I would bet its the cam sensor. Most common causes are either its unplugged, bad connection or a short in the wiring.

Not much movement. Time is non existent to work on it. Did some minor cleanup on it today and played with temp gauge. Appears I need to buy new sending units for temp and oil pressure. Using an IR thermometer on block my gauge is about 50* off.

Took it for a quick spin around block but don't want to drive too long until I have good temp readings.

Better late than never but I will look into this. It still starts rough.

I ordered new sending units that match the digital gauges I bought from Summit. Today I got them installed and they appear to be registering correctly. I had to remove the transmission cover to access the rear of the engine. The nut clips that the cover use are a PITA. Three popped out when I went to put the cover back on.

Now time to drive this thing and get it state inspected.

Nice! That oil pressure... mine only runs 35 to 45, but it has 180k on it.

Yeah I thought it seemed a but high. That picture was taking right after I started the truck. I want to compare with what my Yukon runs at.

I also want to get it up to temp and go for a test drive. I ran out of time on Friday.

1978 J10 Project moved from IFSJA...5.3L swap with QT!!!

Post by msh227 »

Another interesting note... when I was installing the new sensors I noticed that the left O2 sensor's plug was resting on the exhaust and had begun to melt. Could not tell if one of the wires has been compromised but I might replace O2 sensor to be safe (luckily it is the plug on the O2 sensor and not part of the wiring harness).

Is there anyway this could be causing the poor starts I have experienced?

I dont think the 02 sensor would cause the starting issues, but its possible. I think the 02 only comes into play after the engine warms up and comp is trying to adjust the mixtures.

I noticed in your pic where you installed the oil pressure sender that you have the cam sensor unplugged. Did you plug it back in?

Yep, I guess the question is if it is working properly. Maybe I just replace it?

I would check fuel pressures first and make sure its not the fuel regulator, the check ball in the pump or an injector, that sensor can be pricey.

You might try unplugging both 02 sensors and see if there is any difference in startup also? I don't think there will be, but you never know. If you have a scan tool to read codes I would hook it up and see if that 02 sensor is throwing a code due to the melting.

The hot project now is to redo my fuel fill. Fill tube is on an incline and will not fill without pressure.

It is an MSD pump for an LS motor that a few other guys on here are running. Got it from Speedway. It is loud but oh well.

Yeah these starts were good. The start after sitting for 15 minutes was not. I'll try to get video of a bad start.
