86 J10 5.3 engine swap and repaint

Post by Jeepin Jeff »

Thought it was about time to start my own build thread, I have really enjoyed reading others and it got me pretty excited to do the swap. This is going to be a 2 part project as I am also stripping the truck and going back with SPI epoxy and fresh white paint. Truck came from a dry climate so there isn't much rust at all to repair, just a few dents in the bed. The old girl has a high mileage 360 with a 727 and NP208. The plan is to upgrade to a 2002 - 5.3/4l60 from a GMC Yukon and a drivers side drop NP241 from an 89 Chevy truck. Here it is in stock form.

Complete 5.3 donor engine, harness, ECU and 4l60e from a 2002 GMC Yukon.

Broken intake, seems to be somewhat common on these. Could be repaired but I picked up a good used one cheap and replaced knock sensors, intake gaskets and fuel injector orings while I had it off.

Awesome! I like how these Vortec motors are taking over, it is no surprise though since there are parts and support available for this motor swap. Also the fact that the swap is pretty straight forward.

You said it came from a dry climate, but I see a Washington state plate on the front??? Looks like a clean rot free rig though!

Good catch Matt, it came from the Moses Lake area which as I understand is a pretty dry part of the state. Very little rust, couldn't find one here in Kansas for the same money that wasn't a pile of rust or a poorly repaired pile of rust. Bought it from a friend of a friend several years back and had it shipped down here. The 5.3 is really going to make it a nice driver, I am sure.

Very nice, I spent time in the SEA-TAC area of Washington with the Army and can say I have never experienced so much rain in my life.

Hehe, that part of the intake seems to be a popular break point. Mine is broken there as well.

Motorsports unlimited in Lawrence, David Parks. I think he got it from LKQ, it was a takeout, complete with everything. I should have just called them myself and saved a few bucks as they are here in Topeka but he had exactly what I wanted.

Last Saturday morning me and a couple buddies pulled the clip, and the old 360/727 and NP208. Kind of bittersweet, Liked the original setup but its time for a change.
Image

Sold complete takeout to a nice guy that is planning to swap it into his CJ, after he saw my 5.3 setup I think he's having second thoughts.
Image

Couldn't wait any longer for JeepinPetes mounts so I built my own. This was a sub project that took a LOT of time that I would have rather not done but in the end they turned out pretty nice and I am happy with them, hopefully they will fit!
Image

This shot shows the Jegs off road y-pipe for an 02 Yukon. Won't work as it came from Jegs but I plan to modify it and run it under the bell housing as others have done, It is a very nice 2.5" mandrel bent aluminized Y-pipe.
Image

It's in! Well it was for awhile anyway, just a test fitting. My mounts worked perfectly, engine will be in the rear set of mount holes, y-pipe fits great and will be using the rear set of cross member holes. After about an hour I pulled it back out to finish cleaning up the firewall and a few other things that I need to do with the engine out of the way.

Really like Petes motor mount design, great fit and plenty stout. Didn't want to paint them until I knew they were going to work, they are black now.

Next will be the thinning of the original harness.

Looking good. I built copies of Pete's mounts myself. I painted mine two different colors. Black on the frame side, iron engine enamel on the engine side.

Sorry I never got you mount dimensions. Fact of the matter is they probably would not have helped. It's one of those things you have to set the motor and fab up.

They look good!

Re: My 86 J10 5.3 engine swap

Question for everyone that I need to get resolved soon. Am I better off with the flange style front output and a cv joint
5584_1.JPG
or the yoke style and a regular drive shaft?
NP241Chevy.jpg
My drivers drop 241 currently has the u-joint yoke on it but I do have an old parts case with the bell flange and shaft that I could swap into it. I have to buy a drive shaft anyway so which is more desirable? No lift on this truck if that matters.
Thanks
