"Alice"-'89 Grand Wag build & LS 5.3L swap

Post by XJChad »

***I know the 5.3 LS swap is nothing new, and has been covered here and on IFSJA countless times. It seems each one has a little different info than the other. Some are similar, but something can be gained from each one of them. So, I figured it was time I posted my build and current progress. At this time I have finished mock-up, and I getting ready to pull it all back out to finish welding, prepping and painting the mounts, frame and engine bay. I am in no way a pro at any of this, as you will see, my paint jobs come front a rattle can, and I am not an experience fabricator. But, almost everything that has been done on this build so far, has been done by me. ***

I will start off with a little background; my wife and I got into Jeeping 7 or 8 years ago, starting with a CJ-7. We drove the CJ for almost a year when we decided we wanted something that could haul more gear. After talking with my wife's father we decided we would buy XJ's to drive trails and camp out of. We sold the CJ and turned around and bought a '93 XJ. On our way home from buying the '93 we spotted another XJ at a car lot in a town we were driving through. We stopped in and test drove the 91, and started BS'ing with the car lot owner, and ended up making a deal on the '91 XJ. Later that night my father-in-law bought the '91 XJ from us, and thus we started our build....kind of.

My wife decided she didn't like how the '93 looked because it had a few small dents and some peeling paint. She wanted something that looked a little better, so we were back in the hunt for another XJ. A few months later I found our '01 XJ with 124K on the odo and we started our build. We built both XJ's (my father-in-law and I), using the same lift's (Old Man Emu), front and rear bumpers, tire carriers and winches. I added rock sliders and quarter panel guards to ours, and we both went with 31x10.50-15 tires.

After building and driving the '01 XJ on the trails for a few years, we decided to get into ATV's. I had been putting it off because I knew it would be something we both enjoyed, which means more $$$

After doing some trails on ATV's we enjoyed it so much we decided to buy a few so we wouldn't have to rent them. Although I do enjoy riding the trails on the ATV's, it doesn't quench my thirst of hitting the trails in a Jeep. After our last trip to the Salida/Buena Vista CO area in 2012 we decided we needed a bigger jeep to pull the ATV's and our camping gear, thus the search for an FSJ began.

Re: "Alice"-'89 Grand Wag build & LS 5.3L swap

I picked up a 1989 Grand Wagoneer about 9 months ago after my wife and I had searched the internet/craigslist for weeks and weeks trying to find the "right" Wagoneer. After many many phone calls, emails, text messages and hundreds of miles of road trips to look at our next potential dual duty Jeep, we found the 1989 GW in Dallas TX, now known as "Alice".

While we were searching for the right Jeep I would talk to people about their Jeeps before we would drive to look at them. Almost all of them would down play the amount of rust they had, and talk about how good of condition their Jeep was in. There are not a lot of Wagoneers to pick from in Oklahoma, or in the southern states, which means they are "rare", which in turn means they are expensive no matter what condition they are in.

I looked at so many jeeps that were missing part of the frame from rust eating it away, or most of the floor boards and body because of rust, and people still wanted $2,000 to $4,000. Some of them ran, some didn't, but none of them were a $2,000 Jeep, at least not by my standards.

I finally decided I did not care if the Jeep ran or even had an engine, as long as the frame was solid and the body was in decent shape. This is when we found Alice in Dallas TX. I talked to the owner via phone calls, text and email and requested pictures of every angle I could think of. They assured me the Jeep only had a very small amount of surface rust in a few places, but needed the driver side hub replaced due to a bearing locking up. After getting them down to a price I thought was reasonable for not seeing it in person, I took a road trip with my truck and trailer to check it out.

When I arrived it was dark and raining but I could see it had some small dents here and there. It had gone through a hell of a hail storm, but there was very little rust to be found anywhere. After some more discussing we settled on a price and I brought the Jeep home. It has the 360/727/Dana 229 set up with 130k miles on the truck. The waggy came with a bunch of new parts & extra parts; wheel bearings, seals, distributor cap, rotor, fan shroud, new center armrest, fog lights, tail light lenses, a second overhead console, and other new parts still boxed up.

Be patient with me as I haven't had much experience in making threads such as this and adding pics. I think I am starting to get it figured out though.

Time to tear down the front and pull the 360/727/229, and get it ready for the 5.3L swap.

Pulled a 5.3L from a '99 GMC Sierra 1500 Z71. I was able to pull it myself after hearing it run and moving. I pulled the engine, all accessories, a/c components, wire harness, ECM, tranny, NP246, and both drive shafts.

Thank you! It is in pretty good shape, a few hail dents and dings but is virtually rust free. The only rust is a few spots of surface rust which was mostly in the floorboards.
The frame and underside of the body are/were completely rust free.
That was my biggest concern when looking for one to buy.... I hate rust!

I have set the motor in this thing about 15-20 times trying to get it where I want it. I have gone thru 3 different sets of fabbed motor mounts. 1st I used the Jeep mounts and pads; cutting up the metal mounts to fit what I needed, but I didn't like how they looked. 2nd was a combo of the AMC pads and the GM motor mounts, which actually would have worked pretty well but they still set the engine a little higher than I liked.

The 3rd set, which are what I staying with are like the Jeepin Pete mounts that others have used. I saw where others haved tried to contact him to buy mounts and weren't able to get in touch with him. I decided to try them myself, which I think they have turned out okay.

Image

I also did some fab on the tranny crossmember to get the correct angle for the drivetrain.

The stock '99 exhaust manifold is still really close to the frame. These new mounts give more room than the other two, but I'm thinking I might need to go with the LPP shorty headers or later model manifolds. If I have to change them I will probably just go with the headers.

This is from under the driver side with the old motor mounts.

When I installed the lift I also switched out the rag joint for the lower shaft out of a '91 XJ I am parting out.

I bolted the crossmember in to the factory holes on the frame. If I'm not mistaken I used the most rearward and slightly lower holes. Then I cut slots in the crossmember where the original bolts went thru (this is so I can access the nuts for the GM mounting studs). Then set the motor and tranny back in place and measured as best I could to center it, then had to put that riser in to get my angle right. I tacked it in, marked the tranny mount holes and drilled them, set it back in again and ended up doing some more tweaking and tacked it again. I still have some more welding to do on it to finish it up, but nothing else will be changed.
When I pull it back out I can take some more pics and post them if that will help.
