GL's 1970 J4800 Gladiator

Post by glake »

A lot has been done since my last post. It's almost done to the point that I'll be ready to start driving it. All the plumbing has been completed, all electrical is mostly done. I've even fired it up and broke in the motor. Once I get a few more details done, I'll take it out on a test run in the next few days.

Rather than spend hours trying to find the right radiator hoses, I opted to spend a little more and get the stainless ones.

AC/Heat lines all plumbed.

I built a behind the seat storage unit with and amp. I'm not a music thumper, but I do enjoy music, so I'm putting in something that should sound good.

Electrical almost 100% and the interior almost complete. I like to be able to see, so I ran LED rope light around the roof, behind the seats above the storage and below the dash.

Engine bay is done.

All sheet metal, minus the hood, is in place. Loving the emblems.

Last thing I've been working on is getting the windows in. I put the new seals on the vent windows today. I didn't want to spend the money (I've spent way too much already) on replacing perfectly good division bars when all they need are seals. So I found an idea of ifsja. I picked up a few rolls of heavy duty felt strip from Home Depot and cut them to fit. We'll see if it works or if I'll be pulling them back out and replacing the bars.

That's the most asked question! They are middle row seats from a Honda Odyssey. They are take out seats for handicapped access.

Gotta love seeing a blood red Pubic 350 in an FSJ!

Looking great Bro!

Blonde ones can look good too, depending on the upholstery color.

FWIW: I think the Buick 350 had more usable low-end torque than the AMC 360 and 401.
I had several Pubic 350 J-trucks as well as one in a 69 LeSabre that was a monster.
Nice to see one brought back to life!

That was actually one of the selling points of the truck. It's the original motor and was already rebuilt when I bought the truck, just never fired.

I have a few parts I'm not sure what they are for so if anyone knows, I'd like to know.

Those are west coast style mirror brackets.

Also, I have an unusual question. Do you know what size the two hose barbs on the fuel sending unit are? I'm trying to plan fuel lines for my 4600...

What an amazing build! Can't wait to see it in Ouray! Also, wish I could build as fast as you do.

What dash vents did you use? I want to replace the clock and ash tray on RT with AC vents.

BTW, I'm using the same seats in RT. They fit well, and are very comfortable. They were brand new leather, never used and VERY reasonable. Nice build.

What base did you use for the seats? I'm looking at the stock Jeep base for power since the seats have their own back tilt.

Hey GL,
DO you have door panels to match that killer interior?

Almost every night and weekend. Being a teacher is also a big plus. Gotta love summer (don't hate me).

Vintage Air. I believe the part number is 49059-VUL.

I'm loving the seats. A bit more leg room would be nice, but it's a truck!

I've been fighting a number of little issues that have kept me from really testing it. I had issues with vacuum - my fault, I left a port open. Then I had a clogged fuel filter. I guess I didn't get the aux. tank 100% clean.

Now I've been trying to get the timing right. From what I've read, the Buick likes more timing. I've had to bump it to 12-14 degrees to stop the backfire from the throttle body.

I got set of panels from babywag who lives fairly close. Not sure what year they're from, but I painted them an look pretty good. I'll get some pictures up soon.
