T176/177 replacement/ Offroad upgrade

Post by BenD »

1981 Jeep j10, 360/t176/ np208 factory setup. The trans need rebuilt or replaced and I was curious about what stronger transmission would bolt up w/o too much trouble. Driver side drop axle. I was thinking of trying a t18 but the Jeep version was all pass drop, right? I have a Gm sm465 already out of other project that would be nice but idk how it would work. Gimme you’re thoughts, stick with the factory or change over

The easiest for you would most likely be a NP435. Its very similar to the SM465 in gearing and strength, but was used by ford so matches up with available AMC bell housings (T150 bell is the one you need as I recall). You could find the rather rare T18a from an 80+ FSJ, the 79 and older model uses a 'texas' pattern and is not readily adaptable to NP t-cases.

You can try swapping in the 465, but I am unsure of your t-case options or which bell housing you would need.

Thanks for that, I looked it up on Novak adapt and it looks to be pretty easy, and looks like the t176/177 bell housing is a direct fit, maybe a custom pilot bearing, which they have. I’ll contact them directly when I get closer and go over every detail
