1963 Wagoneer IFS new to FSJ Network

Post by Harbourt »

Hi all,

I worked over the winter in Illinois getting this Wagoneer back to operational the way I like them, drivers as stock as I can get them. Brakes, seat belts, radiator & heater core recored, mechanical, hoses, fuel, carpet, all electrical working, etc. I put a set of Powerking bias ply snow tires on it 7.5x15 that look ok, but interested in better options if anyone has ideas. This ol girl has mostly original paint (a few touchups), 61k miles and an unmolested interior. This is my first Willys or jeep or FSJ and it was fun to work on. I like to collect cars and trucks with odd mechanical innovations or changes, and it is arguably the first year of the first SUV.

This Wagoneer has this independent front suspension with torsion bars and the very nice running 230 OHV with 3-spd manual gearbox. 4x4 works great. It smokes for a few seconds at startup then stops, leaks a tiny bit from almost everywhere, but hey that keeps the rust away! I have more pics and am going to try to post them somewhere easy to grab (any suggestions?). I'm amazed how many people stop me to chat about this truck, this and Model T fords seem to get the most looks.

I will need IFS axle boots at some point, the hinge boot is ok, the steering boots are fair....one had a tear I repaired and packed with grease, but I'm worried about finding them, any help would be appreciated. other than that the truck is stable and preserved for the foreseeable future! Saved another odd old vehicle even though my wife thinks I'm nuts.

Enjoy the pics!

Welcome!

I would be very surprised if you found a new set of boots for that. However, I am sure you find find boots for another application that would work.

Great looking waggy.

Welcome. And wow, that is a beauty! The IFS are few and far between.

The interior looks awesome. I like the direction you are taking with it.

yup it is a 1414-C on the plate which the owners manual says is the J-164 Custom. It does not have the Power-lok rear axle, but has several other options, oil bath air cleaner, IFS, compass, reverse lights. Not sure if that stuff was standard on the custom.

Added a pic of the IFS, rides real nice, its no Ferrari, but compared to a 1950 Chevy 1-ton it is smooth!

Wow! Thanks for the pictures of the IFS! That's a rare one for sure.

I bet if you could flip through a parts book (OK, online catalog, now! LOL!), you'd find a current IFS boot that was close enough to work.

nope, no original paperwork, just the neat little oil change stickers through the 60's and 70's in the door jam.

Very nice. She's pretty highly optioned as well.

I love the clean look of the early Wagoneers. They're so crisp, clean, and graceful.
