Plumas-Eureka State Park Camping Trip

Post by Renodemona »

Greetings FSJ-ers! Just got back from a great little camping trip in northern California. My wife and I tried out the Plumas-Eureka State Park campgrounds as an alternative to the usual camp ground we go to near Donner Lake/Truckee. The drive was 67 miles driveway to driveway in record-setting heat. The Jeep performed well except for a slight vapor lock right as we lugged up the steep hill entering the state park and again sitting in heavy traffic just before getting home. She never died, but it means I need to put some serious thought about creating some space between the driver's side exhaust and the fuel lines.

The campsite was awesome! There is a creek that borders one side of the camping area and all of the spaces are full to partial shade and nice and level. There are bathrooms and showers and fresh water spigots about every 4th camp site. There is not a grey water area but they have a handful of spots with RV hookups for sewer. You can have RVs up to 28' or trailers up to 24'. Access is easy for small rigs.

The Park itself contains two old mines which you can explore and a nice little museum with fun activities for kids on the weekends. They have a couple nice picnic spots for day use too. The old town of Johnsville is only a few miles down the road and has an amazing lunch place and a couple bars. There are several hiking trails that leave from the campground area, mostly easy/moderate but they are all quite steep in areas and rather gravel-ey. We hiked up to a glacial carved lake and went swimming. It was refreshing and worth the 3 miles round trip.

All in all, a great trip and a perfect way to spend a couple days! Now, to tackle those pesky fuel lines...
