6.2l diesel swap...... :)

Post by farmerjohnson »

Well I have changed direction with my waggy and I just happen to have a fresh rebuilt 6.2 sitting on the stand that I got for free.

Now I know the diesel world hates the 6.2/6.5 but I know these motors pretty well, also after being in the Marine Corps and seeing that every hmwv has either a n/a 6.2 or a turbo 6.5 I realized that they can't be horrible.

So the plans are, 6.2l/700r4/np231c

The jeep will be a cruiser/weekend wheeler so the 6.2 will do me just right.

So far I am just making the motor look pretty. I'm getting ready to paint it.

Reliability is typically pretty decent on them. Its the fact they they make such poor power, thats why so many people dislike them. Should give you better mileage than your old gas engine for sure, especially with an overdrive. Well, assuming you don't have 2.73 gears or something, that would make OD unusable.

Pretty sure it has 3.21 or something close but that will only be temporary. 4.10 or 4.56 is what it probably will be since I'm rolling 35s.

If its an 80+ its 2.73 standard, or 3.31's optional.

If its a 79 or older, it most likely has 3.07 or 3.54.

Its been quite a few years ago now, but remember seeing a build on one of the diesel forums where a guy added 2 honda turbos, one on each bank. In the vid, it spooled up quick...

Should be fun to watch...

The 6.2 is a great motor, just slow. My dad and I went to Hatfield McCoy Trails in the wv mountains last year with his (now mine) 84 GMC suburban 4x4 with a stock 130k mile 6.2 and rebuilt 700r4. She was pretty slow on the big hills in the mountains and for a 1500 it pulled pretty good even passed a couple of 18 wheelers on the steep highway passes. Keep in mind that was a fully stock c code though, and the difference between my dads F code and a 6.5 with emissions is ridiculous so with a j code 6.2 I reckon it would be better. Put a small turbo putting out 8-10 lbs max and some head studs and it'll be a great old reliable motor.

I would think long and hard about installing a turbo on a 6.2
Yes, Gale Banks sold a kit back in the day; yet others have taken turbos off of 6.5, installing them on the 6.2 and a few have fabricated a homemade manifold to mount a turbo to the 6.2.

Here a few points to consider:

It seems that there was a skirt coating on the 6.5's pistons that the 6.2 pistons did not have.
The idea was that the 6.5 pistons would see turbo service and needed to be able to withstand the higher temps and pressures.
It was suggested to use the 6.5 pistons in the 6.2 block.
I do not have all the details and I will try to search for some more answers and better information.

Next, the 6.5 have under the piston oil squirters to keep the piston cool.
The 6.2 does not.

I would seek out one the many surplus 6.5 motors coming out of military service.
Look for one of these later 6.5 motors where the block was cast by Navistar.
The easiest way to determine is the Navistar diamond logo cast in the lifter valley and other places.
These are the best of the best as far a 6.5 motors go.
These are naturally aspirated, so find a tired or broken GM 6.5, havert the turbo and rated parts, perform some upgrades, larger injectors, tweaked DB2 injector pump, etc..
This would make an awesome Diesel engine for a FSJ

Only problem with the navistar motors is they bring a premium price (start around $3000 without accessories) even auctions on the newer blocks are going above $2000 easily.
