I was across town yesterday afternoon and had a chance to stop by the machine shop. My engine has made it through the backlog and they're working on it. They have the heads done and they're working on the block. They're still two weeks out on final delivery so it won't be here until after Labor Day. I figure I'm going to need a day or two to paint it and then bolt on a bunch of the stuff while it's still out.
I'll probably need an extra set of hands or two on the day I want to put it into the truck. So depending on exactly when it comes back I'm looking at doing it either the weekend of the 12th/13th or 19th/20th.
Who'd be up for lending a hand? Or at least being there to point and laugh as work is being done?
I called the shop and they were just starting final assembly. Since I'll be out of town next weekend and my parents will be visiting the week after, I'm looking at middle of October now. If I'm lucky.

Just in time for the nice weather. Oh, wait, you live In Colorado.
The good news is that they didn't charge me for what they didn't bother to do.
I didn't want to try to get them to do anything else because I didn't want to wait until next year to get it back.
They didn't order head bolts like we talked so they didn't put the heads on. They didn't do any of the oil mods we talked about. I'm sure there are a few more things they didn't bother with but It's been 5 months since I dropped it off. To say I'm a little miffed is an understatement.
But I have a built short block, rebuilt heads, and everything else I need (the head bolts are on the way) to assemble the engine. But I won't be able to get the heads on until later next week when the bolts com in.
So it's going to be at least another week before I'm even close to ready and probably another week or two after that.
I'm still waiting on head bolts to be delivered (tracking says out for delivery today) and then I can get serious about building up the engine. I know I won't be ready to stab it in this coming weekend. The 17th/18th is the earliest it will happen.
I may have figured out why they didn't bother to get head bolts and bolt the heads on. There aren't any dowel pins in the block to line up the heads.
Mother [CENSORED] [CENSORED] [CENSORED] [CENSORED] [CENSORED] [CENSORED]! I should take a [CENSORED] [CENSORED] [CENSORED] and shove it in their [CENSORED] [CENSORED] and I hope they get it stuck there.
Wow... What shop did you use? (So I never go there)
Also, for future reference, I've found G&S Machine to be a decent shop... and Jone's Automotive seems to have done a great job on rebuilding the 360 in my waggy. (completed before I bought it)
1989 Grand Wagoneer - Rebuilt 360, 2" Alcans, 10" travel Gabriel Guadian shocks.
1996 Land Cruiser - 1HD-T Diesel, Gturbo (23psi), Wholesale Automatics 442f, F/R ARBs, 35" Duratracs, ARB Rear Bumper, OME 2" lift, home built sliders and aluminum belly skid
2000 Honda Civic - Integra GSR engine, transmission, shift linkage and axles, 200hp, 33 combined mpg
2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 9 - 437hp/447ft-lb

I didn't figure it out until after they were closed for the day yesterday. And I'm not going to waste time driving all the way over there to hound them. The gas money is more than it cost me to order some new replacements online.
