Just a heads up. This trip is one week away. Snow depth forecast shows no snow in the areas of this trip. Not to say that there could be drifts though. Weather looks to be holding up with only one day of rain this week. Should allow the roads to dry out some. Saturday's extended forecast is sunny in the upper 50's. All in all it looks to be shaping up to be a good trip.

It was a great day to be out in the desert again. Frost in the morning which gave away to a nice clear day with little wind. Perfect for the .59 mile hike into the fighter crash site at noon. We had three vehicles and six people show up for the fun. No major problems except me running point getting stuck in some slimy mud. That was where we decided to return the way we came in rather than risk a more sticky situation.

Vehicles on the old stage road at the watering hole.

Image

After the watering hole it was now time for the steady climb up a fairly rough section of the stage road, fun and with beautiful views of the valley below. We finally crested to the next tier of desert to see a beautiful canyon landscape.

We continued to follow the stage road out to the old stage stop. Along this route we began to get into some light snow that must have fallen the night before.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Then it was off the follow the stage road farther south till we hit the turn off to head to the crash site. At the turn off we have mocked up buildings for military training purposes.

Then it was off to find the F4 fighter crash. Again we climbed higher into the desert passing though a few drainages on the way.

Image

The last stretch of road to the top of the table, where the crash site is, was a rough little two track. I had to get out and chop some brush back in a few place to allow safe passage for the paint on our rigs. Once we got to the top we stopped for lunch.

Image

Image

We are now at 6100 feet and after lunch we begin the hike into the crash site. This was a .59 mile hike from our location. Mostly flat but very rocky and muddy. 20 minutes later we arrive to our destination.

Image

Image

Image

More wreakage below us. Snow drifts looked to iffy to make a hike down although some of us had fun on the drifts.

Image

Image

Then it was the hike back to the rigs.

Then it was on to the next destination. Unfortunately I ran into a bad section of mud and came to a skidding halt. Did not sink, but no directional control at all, like being on ice. We made a short hike up the road and things did not look any better so we called it a day and turned around. We will be back to see those sites another day.

Made a quick side trip once back on the highway. Stopped at a old café gas stop that my Grandfather used to own in the early 70's. Been about 15 years since I last visited. I was shocked at the state of disrepair the place is in now. Lots of old memories that I fear will not be there mush longer.....

Then it was time to head home.

Thanks for all who tagged along for the adventure. I enjoyed your company and hope to see you again on another adventure....

Another successful day in the desert. Met up with three other vehicles at 6:00am and started the day off. Drove through a few small towns and then off to a cool little canyon.

Then it was off to a old ranch site.

Then it was back to the road to the next destination......

We took a couple of interesting roads to next spot.

Image

Image

The next stop was a interesting tunnel in a rock. This was a water outlet for a old earthen dam. A large portion of the dam is still there too.

Image

Image

Image

Image

At this time it was time for lunch before hitting the road again.

And then along the road again going farther into the desert.

We finally hit the end of the trail.....
