What other old 4x4s would you want in your collection?

Post by plasticboob »

This might be taboo on a FSJ site, but I absolutely LOVE late '60s up to mid-'70s SUVs. I really love just about all of them - the Ramchargers, Blazers, Scouts. I'm into slightly rare or uncommon (quirky??) things however, so I've always loved these two especially. Though I honestly like the look of my Cherokee more, if I'm ever rich some day I'd definitely like to snatch up these two, just to have a small collection of vintage early '70s wagons.

What about you guys? Any non-Jeep 4x4s you'd like to get your hands on?

I just about fainted when I saw this one - FJ-55 Land Cruiser (probably the ONLY Toyota I would ever buy, lol) :
Image

I worked for a guy who sold repo'd cars on ebay when I was a kid - he got a lot of rare/quirky stuff, so that's when I was introduced to the FJ. I drove (sold) one with a Chevy 350/4 speed:

My odd 4x addition would be the AMC Eagle wagon for my wife.

Alternators, winches, 4x4, guns all have the same issue if you don't have any knowledge of them usually bad things will happen. Serehill

Willys wagon or Willys pickup. Old Land rovers like in your post. Jeep Commando Pre Bronco looking grille, 1971? . Old Dodge Power wagons 1940's -60's. A 1977 Dodge Power Wagon with the Sno fighter option. Had one of those and I liked it. J20 and a Cherokee Chief 77 and up. A Cherokee that looks like the one Plastic Boob has in his avatar. Old first gen Bronco, 60's - 70's. One of those army jeep pickups M175? A old Toyota pickup HiLux or SR5. I'm sure I'm missing a few.

yeah i was going to say Travelall. That's what first came to mind. Must be lifted however. :)

I like that style of Land Cruisers. I dig the older Series I/II Land Rovers. Also fond of the old Broncos.

The Unimog 404/416 Doka(crew cab) was around by the mid '70's at least.

I dig just about anything from back in the day... My top non-jeep choice would be and old school Land Rover. Like many of my favorite jeeps, they are classic and timeless.

If it isn't a Jeep, I would have an International. Could be a Scout, or a pick-up. Probably from the early 70's.

Landcruisers had solid axles, coil springs, lockers front/rear and FF rear axles until '98. Then they had all that stuff minus the front lockers and IFS. They are awesome vehicles - you have to 'wheel them to appreciate them.

Defender.

I also like the early Broncos, and the Traveler -

Image

The Patrol is such an oddball, I'd be afraid to drive it. And all the Toyotas seem bulky and unresponsive compared to similar Jeeps.

I believe the 80 series is the last live-axle LC -

Image

Also sold as the Lexus LX 450 - with typical upscale stuff. Both very capable, supposedly.

I'd want a flatty first though - but that's a Jeep.

The '68 I got from my friend Brian will be for sale. I pulled the tired 6 and 4 speed. I was looking for AMC V8 or I-6 in IH motor mounts for it. I have an IH304/BW auto from a '66 T/A 2wd I parted but they are gas hogs and I can't find those mounts either (2wd and 4x4 are even different frames) I really wanted to put the spare 4.0L/AW4 I have in it.
