We mourn the loss of another jeep couple

Post by will e »

The crown king trail is very popular. As with many of the trails in AZ there are places where a miscalculation can be disastrous. I don't have much in the way of details beyond what is known in the threads. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

I look back at the Thanksgiving rollover or when Derek went end over end in Tucson. I remember Kevin's brother flopp'n the white Grand and we all know the story of the flying dodo in Ouray. I wasn't there but I have been past that site many times and am in wonder and awe how they were able to walk away.

Let's all be safe out there. Stay focused.

This kind of stuff always saddens me. Also makes me double think going out with just my wife. I don't have any local jeeping friends, so we rarely go out with others. Granted we do nothing difficult when it is just us, but anything can happen.

My thoughts go out to the family.

Married couple dies in crash near Crown King

YAVAPAI COUNTY - A married couple from El Mirage was found dead Sunday off a forest road in the Crown King area. John Mendoza, 44, and Lisa Gutierrez, 42, were last seen leaving Crown King on Saturday night.

They were in a 1969 Jeep that had been modified for off-roading. Some friends followed them out of town until the couple pulled out of sight.

Sunday morning, friends who had not heard from them found their SUV and the trailer for transporting the Jeep near Cow Creek Road and Castle Hot Springs. Parking at the location provided access to a dirt road that led to Crown King.

When John and Lisa still could not be found or reached on their cell phones, friends began searching the road toward Crown King. The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office was notified around 11:30 a.m., and Search & Rescue teams were called out.

At around 1:30 p.m., friends spotted the Jeep in a ravine near the intersection of Forest Roads 711 and 192. YCSO deputies and personnel from the Crown King Fire District hiked down to the crash site and discovered both had died. Gutierrez's body was inside the vehicle and seatbelted in. Mendoza appeared to have been ejected from the Jeep.

According to the YCSO, the Jeep cab is constructed of a steal roll cage with a top plate that came off when the vehicle rolled. The doors are made of smaller steel plates.

The bodies were taken to the medical examiner's office. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

I have moved this where it will probably get more reading. Thanks for the heads-up Mike.

This is tough and has sparked some still vivid memories of November 22, 2010 and how people came together to help us in the days that followed. Krista and I are lucky to be alive and grateful we had friends on the trail with us that day. I encourage those who are also moved to donate to help the Mendoza family.
