Need an 'official' document with towing capacity of my wagoneer

Post by Vanilla Shake »

Hi, I am new on this forum and hope you can help me in to the right direction.

My name is Pete, from the Netherlands, Europe.
I am doing an off-body restoration of a 1968 Wagoneer with a V8 Dauntless.

It has been imported from the States in 1993 and got a valid registration. No problem there..
However, because the specs data of the car was not available the towing capacity was set to nil...
The Dutch road registration office wil only amend the registration if I can hand over a buildsheet or equiv. stating the VIN (or VIN range) and towing capacity.

I tried a few VIN look up databases but my VIN is only 13 digits (1968!) and most search engines will only accept 17 digits....

Does anyone know who to contact to obtain such a buildsheet ?
Soon I will drive a wagoneer which is not even allowed to tow a shopping cart... ;) :P

Finding a build sheet will be impossible, if you don't have it, nobody does.

But there was two tow ratings for most wagoneers. A 3500lb and a 5000lb. But I am not sure if this applied to 60's models. I think your best bet is trying to find some technical documentation that states what it was rated for from the factory.

I was digging through the old jeep sales brochures and came across a 1969 version.
I was unable to find a 68 brochure however.

A TSM should have a break down of ratings and capacitys. Or even an owner's manual.

Anyone ever even seen a 68 build sheet? I know we got people here that are decent with photoshop.

What would make it "Official?" I got a build sheet for my Liberty. It was printed at the local dealership and doesn't have any official "Jeep" or "Chrysler" marks.

TBH if you want to tow with it, id get some of those shocks with springs to keep the rear from sagging alot. But i would imagine it could do 5,000 lbs. It has a larger wheel base and weight then a 5.2 grand cherokee ZJ and they can tow up to 6500lbs and 6700lbs with 2wd offically.. I would also make sure you have power steering and power brakes, and if you have drum brakes i would upgrade to disk brakes

Im not sure how the brakes on a Wagoneer compare to a ZJ though

Hehe! That's an option I suppose. I know a guy who is pro with CS6 Extended that might be able to help in that regard. 8-)

I was thinking earlier; At some point hitch manufacturers began marking their products with the max ratings either as a decal or stamping. If the hitch was made by a regular manufacturer, there is a chance those ratings might be there and readable.

That's a good idea! Or find a hitch from a latter wagon that has the ratings still present.

Now THAT just might be enough for the Dutch registration office!
Nice catch.

I got the brochure for 1968, ref : 67-11R, according to the brochure the towing capacity is 5000 lbs like for 69, as for 69 a list of heavy duty options are recommended for this capacity. (Recommended doesn't mean mandatory.)

Actually the specs provided by Kaiser Jeep in their Data Books included the GVW but not the Towing capacity
