Bought a J3000 dually

Post by Kaiserman »

Have this posted on IFSJA, but I know some of you guys don't go on there much anymore.

I just bought a 1968 J3000 dually with a 34" frame stretch. It's on a 160" wheel base now. Very professional looking stretch that looks like it was done when the truck was new.

The odometer show 24K and it looks original. There is no wear on the gas pedal or steering wheel. The original motor blew so it's got a rebuilt 350 from a Buick car in it now. With headers, a Poston aluminum intake and a Weber 4bbl.

Truck is well optioned. Custom Cab, V8, P/S, P/B, Lock-O-Matics, posi rear, bucket seats, tinted glass and a transfercase mounted ebrake.

Needs a lot of cab work, a bed, six wheels and tires and some misc. things.

Got it for $2500 with a fresh registration so I have paper work.

Note the plate on the frame behind the cab. Frame is solid underneath it, and there isn't one on the other side. No clue why it's there.

Heck yeah! I wonder how hard it would be to turn it into a roll back. That'd be awesome!

One of my first thoughts! But it's only an 8600lb GVW. The DOT would nail me to the wall if I ever got caught hauling a truck with it!

I found a 12x8 Knapheide bed for it I'm hoping to get this weekend.

Boo! I bet it would be a nightmare to get it recertified if it was even possible.

The only issue I see with putting a rollback on is the frame. Those are typically C&C trucks which have a large, straight frame out the back. The truck frame gets mighty thin in back. But if not actually ever having anything on the back, it should be fine.

Got it home. Actually to my cousins. Had to put in in four wheel drive to get it on the trailer. Dug 4 nice pencil thin holes in the soft beach sand most of Maine is made of trying to get it on in 2WD. Good to know the posi still works!

Should have this at my house next weekend. In the mean time I've been buying parts for it. So far I've got:

Six new Power King Super Traction 7.50-16's mounted on Dodge 6 lug dually wheels
New front and rear shoes/springs kits/wheel cylinders/brake hoses
New Monroe Magnum shocks for the front and rear

And this week I'll be ordering a new:

Master cylinder
belts
fuel pump
Ignition switch

I have four Jeep ignition switches, and five Jeep keys. Think I could find a matching pair!?

Here's the new bed loaded on the truck until I can get around to working on it. It's a Reading Body 12.5x8' bed. It's 3" wider than a stock bed. It needs four cross members, but otherwise is very solid and straight. Paid $150 for it. And lost my tail board for the 71 bringing it home :banghead:

And a pic of the Dodge wheels with my 7.50-16's mounted up on them.

Tossed all the old ignition stuff Saturday and swapped on the nearly new parts I had pulled from my 63 when I went to HEI. And a set of new Delco plugs. Fixed a few PO related things. The electric choke was zip tied shut. And the PCV valve was capped off. The PCV port of the carb was run to the breather on the valve cover

Starts right up now, and runs very well.

So I finally got some things done on the old dually.

New:

Mechanical fuel pump, hard line to carb, filter
P/S and Alt. Belts
Pressure and return hoses for the PS
CHROME!!! air cleaner (for now, this is probably going back to a 2bbl)
All radiator hoses/bypass hose, heater hoses, thermostat and housing
Freshly re-cored radiator
Tires

Used:

Dodge wheels
Complete power steering pump and bracket assembly from another '68 Glad.
OEM fan shroud (my last, and worst condition one)
Buick clutch fan blade with a replacement clutch
Boiled out heater core and repainted box from a 66 J3000
Complete low mileage tune up (plugs, wires, points, condenser, rotor and cap) from my 63 (pulled when I went to HEI)

Also, note how different my front drums are from the one Elliott has in his dually registry.

My $669.38 radiator
Image

Late model production change on the drums apparently.

So I got into the brakes a little today. Have the R/F apart to the inner knuckle.

The Spindle, Inner front wheel bearing and Seal are all different than the 5-7K lb GVW trucks, and also different that the 8000lbs GVW trucks. Meaning they are late model dually specific!

Managed to track the bearing down. It's the same as a 60's Chevy C30 front inner. The seal for the Chevy is close, but has a slightly smaller OD.

Good thing my seals seem to be in good shape! As are the drums. TONS of meat left, and they don't need to be turned. Hope the L/F is the same!

Dodge wheels on.
Image

One of the two VERY bad wheels on the truck. The two bad ones are from a Ford. The four Jeep wheels are in better shape.
Image

Underhood so far. I was told it's a stock rebuild. Going to go back to the correct for '68 2bbl and manifolds.
