Identify Jeep Wagoneer in South Africa

Post by Rider39 »

Good day,

I have just purchased a Jeep Wagoneer and need to identify the correct year model Although registered as a 1968, I believe it to be an earlier model.

I have found the build plate in the left front door pillar.
It reflects ; KAISER JEEP CORPORATION TOLEDO.
Serial number 1414205981AA

Kindly assist.
TIA.

According to some old records the CKD kit was built in Toledo in june 1967, i don't have a specific date for the assembly in South Africa

Do you have a small blue plate on the Firewall with written : "KJA xxxx" (xxxx being a number) ?

You may also have a look to the 232 rambler engine number
J10 81, J10 77, CJ7 80, Gladiator 64, Wagoneer 65, ZJ 5.9
parts vehicles : wagoneer 63, cherokee Golden eagle

Rider,
Engine number decoding from parts catalogs : low compression 7.5:1 (as usual in oversea countries), engine build date : july 7th 1967. My previous estimation was wrong of a few days

Any number stamped with "S.A." on the firewall ?

Hi Mud,

Awsum news, much appreciated. I did not find any other markings.
Have started the stripdown, hopefully might find other markings.

So, safe to say it is a 1968 model. What gets me is the Rhino grill ?

Hi Mud,

What shop will you recommend who will ship Wagoneer parts to me? New or used parts.
Thanks.

The rhino grille is indeed surprising , but that's not the only difference between US production and oversea production or assembly. For example the Australian FSJs got the 232 rambler engine in 1968 instead of late 1965 in the US..
For parts others may provide better advices than me.., i use rockauto, bjsoffroad or ebay US
Of course the specific parts are the most difficult to get, you may also use forums like this one, junkyards which sell online or facebook groups
J10 81, J10 77, CJ7 80, Gladiator 64, Wagoneer 65, ZJ 5.9
