AMC Engine Rebuilder in TX?

Post by Jeepin' Pete »

Does anyone know / have a trusted engine shop who is familiar with AMC's in the east TX / DFW / western LA area? All the shops I've called that are local say they haven't touched an AMC in years, and if they even bother to quote a price, its really high. Not looking to do anything crazy, just basic rebuild with an RV cam.
Thanks!

Any good builder wouldn't shy away from an AMC nothing really "special" about rebuilding them.

You might try reaching out to sportsidedan and see about a recommend though.

Thanks! I'll reach out to him, and if he has any recommendations I'll post them up in case anyone else is curious.

I went to see Daniel about a month ago and asked him where he gets the engines rebuilt, he sends all the engines to a SoCal shop. When I was looking around Austin unfortunately I didn't find anyone either.

I reached out to Daniel at Jeep Heritage and he said they use the same engine builder as Chip Foose in CA, and it was around $14k. I'm not in that deep, so I guess I'll keep looking locally.

If you don't mind shipping the engine, check out SC/397 over at IFSJA. He's got a great reputation over there for rebuilding AMC V8s.

Ledford Performance in Waco. They can rebuild a 17th century steam engine. Good prices. I had a lot of work done on a Ford 400 a few years back, and the work was top notch. Friend just got back his LT1 from them -- he's currently re-assembling it but all looks good.

Thanks guys - really helpful links!

Anyone recently have a 360 rebuilt and have a rough total cost they are willing to share?

Costs vary widely by shop and location, and depends on what exactly you want to do.

Figure $2-$3k depending on what parts you use, what machine work is done and you're assembling.
If they're assembling it'll obviously be more.

SC/397 posted his costs may give you an idea, but for your area might be more/less.

I haven't had it rebuilt yet... I reached out to Rick (SC/397 at IFSJA) and he was really helpful. He isn't as cheap as a remanufactured engine from BJ's but he does the more than the long block, and he breaks the engine in. I'm working on saving up the funds to send it to him as I think his quality and AMC experience is worth it, but I've heard good reviews of the S&J engines that BJ's offers.
Every shop local to me wants a premium because they hardly ever deal with AMC's.

I would second Rick, but may want to reach out to these guys for another opinion as they're in your area.

Had my 360 rebuilt about a decade ago now. Shop here in seattle, $3500. I supplied the cam, lifers, intake. Engine builder got the timing chain cover, and went through the heads. Assembled and sealed the engine, Bored .30 over.

I'm doing all the work myself, only sending the heads and block out for the machine work and I'm coming up with with about $1700. Only time will tell how far over I go.

City Motors in Dallas rebuilt my AMC 360 for $1800. Took it in on Monday and picked it up on Friday. I pulled the motor and accessories. Very pleased with the work 2 years later.
