Alternator and bracket

Post by melford72 »

The PO of my Wag had cobbled together a GM alternator/bracket setup (that I suspect was adapted from a GM truck) and I never really liked it. The system didn't fit right, tightening it was a pain, belts didn't line up, and it just wasn't very well done.

So today I switched the belts back to how they should be and got rid of extra spacers/washers that were put on there by POs. And now the alternator won't even really go on. (Like I said, the bracket is not right and it wants to put the alternator right where the oil filter is.) Even with the alternator adjusted all the way out, it just won't go together right.

So the time has come to fix it and do it right, so I wanted to see what has worked for everyone else. What alternator/bracket setup are you running? Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I recall a '72 will have a Motorola alternator from the factory. There is an adapter sold to change the Motorola bracket to a Delco: https://store.alternatorparts.com/a275- ... acket.aspx if you want to use that approach.

The V8 AMC engines got the Delco alternator from '78 (?) onwards, so you should be able to find a donor car that can provide the brackets. There was a change in crank pulley somewhere in there, so watch out for compatibility. Check the part-outs here and on IFSJA, to get everything off the front of the donor engine.

Take oil filter off.. losen the alternator.. put the belt on.. get a pry bar and pry the alternator back as much as you can eithout hurting thr bearings.. tighten it and see if the oil filter will go back on

I have a '72 as well with original mounts but I'm still running the 30 Amp Motorola. Here is a pic of the mount

There is a bracket that goes from the block to the top of the alternator bracket and this

Goes in there at the bottom as well but there is no bracket to the back of the alternator.
