Springs and Lift Kit thoughts

Post by MReese Wagoneer »

So as I wait for the engine to be complete, looking at my list of wants, I know my springs are not at original height.
What is everyone's thoughts on a 2-3" lift, BJ's has one and TGW has one
It will be mostly daily and towing some Forest Service Roads occasionally hit a trail or two, I know I do not want to go 4" and Rough Country has never been much on my list for any lift.
How do BJs springs and Billstiens stack against TGW kit

I was considering a new steering box as well but I don't know how the current one feels, It is almost 40 years old and 100,000ish miles, i will likely leave that till after the engine is in and running and I get to drive it some

This is 4” BDS lift with 32” tires. I know you said you didn’t want 4”, but i always thought it looked about perfect for the late model rigs.
One day I will wake up and realize that my jeep is complete...one day, I just know it.

I fixed your image for you jpswapmohn. Just right click the image and copy image location on imgbox.

I don't have any experience with TGW springs, I am not sure who makes them. BJ's has used a few different spring makers over the years, but they have typically been pretty good.

If this helps at all this is my 90 after i put new OEM no lift made in usa springs on. This pic will show you how much your wagoneer is probably sagging with the 30+ year old springs on, I gained 3 inchs of ride height with stock height springs lol,

TGW springs are made by crown. They are the cheap chinese springs, so are BJ's springs, at least for OEM springs, the 2-3-4 inch lifts im unsure of. The 2nd picture is before i changed the springs.. See the difference ?

Thanks Candyman ... that is a strong consideration, I have a local spring shop I dealt with back in the 80's. I think I am going to talk with him.
Thanks for the pictures, I will get some before and after !!

They did settle like half an inch down of course.. but i still gained like 2 1.2 inches of ride height after the settle. The rear i gained about an inch the front i gained the most.

Just something to consider is all, the way its sitting with new stock springs i could easily put 31 or 32s on i bet... the new springs make my 29 1.2s look dinky.. so if i gained 2 1.2 inchs and i get say 32s on that 4-5 inches of total body ride height i could gain.

Im 6ft and when i sit in my jeep i have to hop in a tad to get in the seat right.. never had to do that before i get new oem springs on

Mind if I ask where you sourced your springs from? I plan on doing a refresh on my truck's suspension soon and a good set of no lift springs is on my list.

Lots of places sell them. But they all come from the same place... Mine were made in PA.

I got my front springs from i believe SD truck springs and the rear i got from general spring.com.

I made a thread 2 years ago on here of the springs i got it had pics ect.. dunno if they still work. Here is the link to my pics and so forth.. they are made by stanley spring or dayton parts in PA usa

I got the 97-402 for the front they are heavier duty at 1450 lbs vs 1330 lbs. And the rear is 97-495 or was 485 i dunno for the part number.. I dunno if they will work on a 79 j10 but they might have ones for your truck

Here looled up 79 j10 they have many kinds for yours it seems a 79 j10 is backword compatible all the way up to a 91 grand wagoneer. some are 5 pack 6 pack 7 pack.. Id get the 7 pack 97-402 higher load capacity and a better ride with 7 springs.

https://www.generalspringkc.com/product_p/97-402.htm

Seems the rear are all the same too. But for a pickup truck id get the higher load rating 1150 lbs is 1.2 ton.. but im not sure what weight rating the j10s had.. i see the 1150 and heavy duty 1560lbs rear.. Id probly get the 1500 lbs ones if i had a pickup. But it all depends what kind of ride you want too.

Part numbers changed on the 1150lbs i dunno why.. mine were 97-485 but noticed the link on the nottom says 97-493.. yet they are idential in weigjt and measirements.. lol

Thank you indeed. Leafs were the last thing I hadn't settled on yet so this helped a lot.

If you are going to replace the steering gear box I would highly recommend red head steering boxes. They do special machine work that no one else does. I installed one on my J20 and it steers like a new truck!

Deaver makes awesome springs. Here's my waggy on 2" Alcans. The have been great springs for about 5 years now.
