Friend of mine has an '05 TJ that's acting up and we can't figure out why. After the Jeep warms up the trans won't want to shift out of 2nd gear after getting warm and most of the time shutting it off will fix the problem but that doesn't always work.
Here's the specs:
05 TJ
4.0
Auto
180K
RHD
It's a postal Jeep so it sees upwards of 600 stops a day and LOTS of stop and go driving.

You know it's bad when your car is on the EPA's 10 most wanted list!

I'll have to ask him, the fluid is nice and clear. He's not the kind to slack on maintenance so I imagine it's been done a time or three.

If it's the 3 speed auto, the valvebody solenoid is sticking. Shutting off and restarting gives a little voltage boost (from the alt kicking up to replenish the drain from the starter) which can make it work again for awhile. Repair is to swap out the valve body for a fresh one. If 4 speed auto, it depends on whether it's AW4 or 42RE (same issues as 3 speed 999 auto)

Something I learned a long time ago was: if you have an aluminum case MOPAR transmission, change the fluid and filter once a year or every 12,000, which ever comes first. The folks who followed that advice rarely (if ever) had problems with their transmissions, myself included.
