Here's a picture of the new fuel system to be put in.

Image

What you see here is:

+21 Gallon Plastic Fuel Tank
+Fuel Sending Unit
+Fuel Pickup Tube
+25' roll of 5/16 steel tubing
+25' roll of 3/8 steel tubing
+New mechanical fuel pump
+New fuel filter

All of the old system was done with rubber hose. Yuck. That will be replaced with solid steel line. It's no wonder there's plenty of rust and sediment in the tank currently.

Looks like a bunch of break downs to me!

Feels like it too. I can't count how many times these two have left me stranded, though most of those are the Mustang's fault.. Or my fault.. eh...

I hear ya on that, that's why I have 3 vehicles. Always breaking something on one and on occasion two.

Stock tank out

Inside the stock tank, actually looks pretty clean besides the stuff I dropped in it. Still put the new plastic tank in though. Auxiliary tank could be dirtier, we'll see.

Cleaned up

filters everywhere! Fill/vent hoses all had to be replaced, dried stiff and cracked.

New fuel tank in

Image

Cut some rubber inner tube for padding on the bracket

Image

Had to grind the corner down off this bracket a bit to make it fit

Image

Everywhere else bolted in cleanly

I found that the original stock steel fuel line was still in tact and not rusted, blew clean air through. I was able to reuse the portion that runs into the engine bay so that was convenient. Tossed the bad fuel pump, relocated the good electric fuel pump after cleaning it up, ran good pressure through. Still installed the new mechanical pump as well for an emergency back up!

During the process of installing the fuel tank I worked on cleaning up the haggard wiring. Bypassed the ammeter in the dash while troubleshooting the fuel gauge. Forgot to take pictures of having the gauge cluster out and working on that, oops. It was scorched where the ammeter connected in. Glad to have that taken care of.

One of the hot wires ran from the dash, through the floor to a fuel pump, and spliced out to run the brake lights. Craziness. So after cleaning that up I no longer have functional brake lights. I've purchased a new wiring harness from BJ's and fortunately AV4X4 has graciously agreed to install it for me. It will be nice to have the rats nest cleaned up.

Winter is coming, and so are some new parts.

Here's what's on the list to be installed imminently:

+DUI Distributor and LiveWires
+Edelbrock Performer intake
+Summit Quadrajet w/ electric choke
+New exhaust manifolds
+Timing chain, distributor gear, water pump, thermostat, etc.
+Wiring harness
+New brake system

So the Jeep has made its way over to BigJ200's shop for some extra added expertise. If you've seen his build thread, you know good things are in store for this Golden Eagle.
