Hi, newby here, many years wrenching, professionally and hobby, hopefully can be of help here. Question is, I traded for an 84 Wagoneer with the NP229 t case, haven't seen the case yet, was told that the po flat towed it and it spit the viscous coupler out the side of the case. A reman 229 is 1100$, how does the community deam I should go? Have heard a 208 will bolt up..?
Not really, but it is a common swap. If I was in that situation, I'd get ahold of a junk yard or part-out 229. It really is a great case operationally, right up there with the quadratrac for all weather traction and reliability. 4lo is real 4lo just like the 208 or any other aluminum chain driven case. 4hi is anytime 4x4; gravel, icy highway, muddy driveway, whatever. Good traction and won't bind up.

Howdy from Phoenix.
It's not just a bolt in to put an np208 but it's not a big effort either.
Rear drive shaft may beed to be lengthened.
Manually locking hub conversion on the front axle.
The flag shifter on the floor will work but the handle isn't accurate anymore. THe 208 shift pattern is different.
I swapped a 219 for a 208. I liked the 208 but the 229 is a good case. You can probably find a used one for a decent price.
