Hedman header install pictures/info?

Post by DanHS »

I'm looking at getting Hedman headers for the GW, these model# 99250 ones that say they are for 80+ Wagoneers. I know there may be some clearance, fitment, and heat issues, and that they're not going to be of very much benefit until I upgrade the cam and carb, but I need better exhaust and may as well put my effort into upgrading it all now. I don't mind doing a bit of work to clean up the flanges or ports if I need to. I plan to buy prebent sections of 3" pipe and cut and fit everything myself. I will use a single in-dual out CherryBomb Vortex muffler flipped backwards to double as my Y-pipe to save space, and then put a glasspack on the end of that, I figure that should keep my exhaust fairly quiet but retain the deep rumble sound. The design of the Vortex should allow it to function backwards just fine, it is at least far better than the lousy factory Y-pipe!

I need some pictures of the 99250's installed and how they are piped, I saw a few pictures searching here and IFSJA, looks like I'll need to have the driver's side pipe make a 90* bend right in front of the transmission crossmember, then 90* again and into the muffler. I'm also wondering how the 99240's would fit, those are listed for '79 and older Jeeps and look a bit longer, which I assume means I'd have less room for my 90* bends. As always, pictures and been there done that experiences greatly appreciated.

The older version of the headers is what I have on my 88 GW. The left one ends up pointed right at the front drive shaft. I had the exhaust pipe shop modify the collectors so exhaust pipe would miss the drive shaft. It cost a bit more but I got a screaming deal on the headers so it is a wash.

Here is the 88

Thanks Flint, the front driveshaft is what I'm concerned about, have to figure out how to route the pipe without it getting whacked by the shaft.

Anyone else have any pictures? I'll post on IFSJA too.

Dan, have you committed yet? I am looking at the same headers. Did I read this right, the pictures are of the older headers (99240s), not the 99250s?

Sorry if I confused the topic. The modified 99240s (shorter collectors) are on an 88 in the 1st pic and non-modified 99240 on a 77 in the 2nd pic. As I understand the Hedman 99250, the left collector does not point at the drive shaft for 80 and up FSJ V8s.

I had a set of Hedman Headers on my 82 Wagoneer back in the in day, I too had to have the collector modified.
