1979 J10 trans and transfer case?

Post by pcoplin »

Looking at a 79 J10 4.2 with an auto. What trans and transfer case would this have? I'm hoping not a Quadratrac...

thanks!

All 74-79 FSJ's with automatics came with Quadratracs.

The trans will be a TH400, just like the V8. This resulted in VERY poor performance. The TH400 saps roughly 30% of an engines power, more so than smaller transmissions. The 258's with autos were just SLOW. The 80's models with 904/999's were acceptable.

But unless you plan on swapping, or the truck is REALLY nice, I would pass.

Swapping an engine in isn't really a big deal, I just swapped in a 5.2 into our Wagoneer. However, I was hoping just to TBI the 4.2 and drive it to work. Gonna be a turd, huh?

Looks nice to me, only 100k miles, but I haven't looked at it yet.

Truck looks nice. If all its for is around town it should be fine. If you live in the mountains though, it will be unpleasant.

That is a beautiful truck. If nothing else, you could drive it as is and search for the drivetrain out of a 92-95 Cherokee and swap it in. A 4.0 with AW4 and D300 would move that truck along nicely...

I'm sort of a V8 guy, but this isn't a bad idea. Although I'd probably take the 5.2 out of the Wagoneer and swap the 4.0 into it instead.

Does the 4.0 use the same mounts as the 4.2 does?

Yes. One motor mount hole on the engine brackets may need modding if it's a Renix engine (where the knock sensor goes is a metric hole) Another option is TBI the 4.2L (or MC2100) and put either AW4 (which needs a manual controller or TPS wired in with the computer to control it) or 727/9XX with Dodge NP208 (RH drop)

Mounts aren't the same, but the 4.2L mounts will fit the 4.0L
