Christmas AZ run (not actually on Christmas)

Post by TUDrewser »

Hey AZ guys, I have family coming into town for Christmas and my dad expressed an interest in going wheeling after seeing my pictures from last weekend. Turns out he used to wheel the old muddy mining trails back in W. Virginia 40 years ago (I had NO idea he did that). So, anyone up for leading us on a fun run sometime around the week of Christmas?

Here's my schedule that works: my dad is flying into town on 12/21, so 12/22-12/24 is all fair game as far as I can tell. I am off work 12/20-12/25, but then have to work 12/26 and 12/27. My dad flies out 12/28 IIRC.

Seeing as I've been on exactly one ride, I will need a knowledgeable leader and, more importantly, someone with a winch. 3-5 hours would be a good ride, though that's flexible either way.

As for location, a ghost town, old mine, or another point of interest would be most appropriate...he loves stuff like that.

Who's interested? And what day? Oh heck, lets make it a poll.

For what it's worth, Monday works best for me, but I'm guessing not everybody has the day off...

I didn't vote (yet) but could be up for something on the 22nd if it's really just a 3-4 hour run (this last one put Em and I in the jeep for 11 hours total) I need to leave Tucson on the 23rd for a sanity road trip.
I don't have enough experience with the Florence area to lead, miles of trails and we would wander around for hours.

If you wanted to come down this way I think either rstep or myself could lead a Chimney Rock run, your rig will do fine, LB trucks will have some issues (except Jeff, he has a great ability to get through most anything).
It's about a 4 hour run and we like to start early to avoid the quad crowd, their traffic here is way less than Florence but it is university break time so you can flip a coin on that.
It's not a hard run but AZ pinstriping is to be expected for the first part of the trail.

But, that put you in the position of doing the highway miles?

So Sunday if I want the spare parts rig with us. I can probably do the highway drive...just concerned about being tired after the drive and having to drive home. But I guess anywhere I go I have to drive...

Just throwing it out there, any Phoenix guys up for crown king?

If it wasnt closed Martinez cabin and the mine equipment a little further along would have been cool. Folks messed up the cabin. It is closed to motor vehicle access. If you poke around you might be able t9 find out how far a walk it is from the gate.

Ck is going to be very cold at the top.

You make very valid points about the cold, or even snow. This is why I will be a follower for a long time ;)

Any cool ghost towns with buildings still standing?

Yeah, I was going to suggest that. A lot more local wheelers who know a lot of areas. If you find a run let me know. I can run on the 22nd.

I would love to hitch a ride with someone, but I won't be in Phoenix until 23rd.

Maybe can just meet a few folks for a cold beverage someplace between Christmas and New Years?

That too is not a bad idea, sometimes we can't get away due to plans or a broken waggy.

Heck Drew, if you just want to run around some hills you can come up here. We could wander the forest roads, or even do the back way to Jerome. :-bd
