'Meredith' 1972 Wagoneer

So I went and got me another FSJ. 1972 Wagoneer with 360/TH400/D20. Has a SOA front and blocks rear looks like it was done ok but will need some work eventually. Currently not running but looks like it has new or a couple years old wires, plugs, cap, fuel pump, and oil filter. Makes me hopeful it can get running again without too terribly much work but we shall see. Body has some rust but Frame looks ok. Interior is complete just kinda ratty due to sitting out behind a house for 3 years with a window down. Dragging it home Monday to start really getting into it.

I like it! It definitely looks like someone cared for it for a while. Great start and nice cheese grater.

You can call it Meredith, but since it has the cheese grater grille and is a yellow-orange, I dub it Cheddar!

Butterscotch Gold. A popular color in '72. Have the side panels been painted over? IIRC they were wood grain originally. Maybe faded.

Meredith came home today and I started cleaning and collecting parts. I believe the wood panel has faded and was painted over some time ago.

Got her running today! Just needed a new ignition switch, battery, cables, and fuel line. Carb leaks everywhere so need a seal kit, but SHE LIVES!!!!!

It has some really small cherry bomb mufflers, so, that's part of it. But it sounds pretty good none the less. Now to rebuild the carb or at least put on some new seals and work out the other little random things. Plan is to be more of a family camper and cruise night rig rather than more overland focused, but I still plan to go hit some trails when she's ready. Also help teach the kids a little bit about cars and such.

Just a comment - I would think that Reno would be prime hunting ground for Jeeps of this vintage. In 1972, the largest Jeep dealership in the nation was in Reno, and they were largest because they sold so many ... Wagoneers.
These Jeeps will go lots of places.

You reckon it was ever in California? It looks identical to a friend of mines rig they had in the late 80's.

I've seen a few early 70's rigs with the white stripe over the years but cant find anything in Jeeps literature alluding to a white stripe option. Would like to know. I just acquired a 72 Butterscotch gold with white stripe so definitely would like to know although I do plan on keeping it white.

Look at the parts book and at the TSM for 1972. The TSM shows the Wagoneer with wood grain (in that area) and a J4800 with white above. Jeep was easy about such things, and you might be able to get a white/gold Wagoneer with the J-truck 2-tone scheme. In that case, you would get a single stainless (?) trim strip that divided the white from the gold. No indication the config with two trim strips ever came through with a white panel.
You might glean some other information from the paint codes and trim perforations in the panels. I'd also think you could look at the white paint that's there. If original, it will be acrylic enamel baked-on and match that year's "Champagne White." I would bet on it being added later, in the region where the "wood" panel was.

Sounds like a plan Just ordered the TSM but have the 1972 Catalog and literature. Will take a closer look at the trim codes as well...just need to order a External USB CD drive from Amazon and a Parts CD

Figuring out trim codes for a '72 may be difficult. The TSM has lots of good info but nothing about the trim codes unfortunately. There is/was a foil tag glued to the firewall with the paint and trim codes for that vehicle. These very often fall off and are lost. A quick look at the '72 parts book shows a lot of parts listed by the codes, but no table to assign a name to each code. Maybe you can figure it out by looking at the listings and comparing various parts and listings. Sales literature would help to define the options.
