Fiat Chrysler and Renault are in advanced partnership talks

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Renault are in advanced discussions about a possible alliance, according to a report from the Financial Times citing an anonymous "person familiar with the matter." The news isn't particularly surprising, as FCA has been a constant subject of merger and alliance talks for as long as many of us can remember. We've reported on a potential tie-up between these two automakers several times, as far back as 2008 and as recently as two months ago.

especially after this one hits the news stand... : major issues at Renault with thousands (400K built between 2012-2016) of faulty engines the 1.2L, code H5FT, sorry cannot find english article. It seems to be on some Nissan models, probably built in Europe.

As a French I am not in favor of this merger, it is too favorable to FCA, by the way it's FCA who made the proposal..
Besides the latest mergers involving French companies has generally been unfavorable for the French side, French are too naive

So soon we forget the tragedy of the Renix 4.0L. It's bad enough that the Fiat Renegades have software issues that break the seat by adding a safety to the sunroof, but damn, adding Renault back into the mix is such a bad idea. Oh well, I'd never bye a Jeep newer than 24 years old, so whatever.

Too early to say if this is a merger. It may very well be an alliance as is stated. Where they share platforms and such without licensing costs. This is extremely common in this day and age. There are a huge number of cars that share platforms across different auto makers.

One of the more recent ones is the Toyota Supra, which is about 80% BMW Z4.

Renix was a long ways from a tragedy. Mine had 180k miles on it when I sold it, only problem was an AIC that needed to be replaced. People like to complain about them, but the system works fine. Most people just don't understand that it has a mix of analog and digital circuits in it. Where as ODB II have no analog adjustments.

We all love FSJ's and such, but frankly AMC build quality was subpar compared to others of the era. I don't see this alliance having any sort of impact on Jeep.

Merger or alliance, are words that have a dangerous label, who is going to impose its will.... what the consensus be ? the biggest ego or the loudest mouth. Sure a lot of people will be squeezed, profit is the common denominator...

Renix was not a bad system, we had a 90 Wrangler w the renix, and it work flawlessly, never an issue until the CPS started to give up, I still manage to drive back from SD to SF. Good for 195Kmiles until daughter fried the engine when she ran out of coolant, 3x.

Our vehicles are totally outdated, but so basic that it is easy or easier to fix than the newer generations from 3 generation ago....

From Wikipedia because I am lazy... AMC and Jeep has been down this road before.

Problems at Renault and assassination
American Motors' major stockholder, Renault, was itself experiencing financial trouble in France. The investment in AMC (including construction of a new Canadian assembly plant in Brampton, Ontario) forced cuts at home, resulting in the closure of several French plants and mass layoffs. Renault was down to just three alternatives regarding its American holdings: (1) They could declare AMC officially bankrupt thereby lose its investment; (2) They could come up with more money, but Renault management perceived AMC as a bottomless pit; or (3) AMC could be put up for sale and the French could get back part of their investment. Against these detractions, Renault's chairman, Georges Besse, continued to champion the French firm's future in the North American market; pointing to the company's completion of the newest and most-advanced automotive assembly plant in North America, then known as Bramalea Assembly, as well as the recent introduction of the thoroughly modern, fuel-injected 4.0 L and 2.5 L engines. In addition, Jeep vehicles were riding an unprecedented surge in demand. It seemed to Besse and others that AMC was on course for profitability.

However, on November 17, 1986, Georges Besse, who had a high profile among French capitalists, was assassinated by Action Directe, a clandestine militant extremist group variously described as communist, anarchist and Maoist,[74] which professed strong sympathies for the proletariat and the aspirations of the Third World. The murder was carried out by members of Action Directe's Pierre Overney Commando (named after a Maoist militant killed by a Renault factory guard).[75] The group stated that the murder was in retaliation for Besse having sacked tens of thousands of workers – 34,000 from the French aluminum producer PUK-Péchiney[76][77] and 25,000 from Renault.

The next year Chrysler came to the rescue of Jeep but said buh bye to AMC cars.

...Fiat Withdraws Merger Bid After Renault Delays Decision on Combination... down the drain, apparently FCA did not want a government rep on the board, this is France and basically around 50% of the workers depend on the government for their salary, directly or indirectly.
