I have a chance at a 5.7 Hemi.

Was thinking of putting in my 87 GW.

How hard would that be? What would it involve as far as what adapters or other things would have to be modified to do it right? Cost?

No more expensive than any other modern engine swap. You can get standalone controllers for a 3rd gen Hemi just like you can with LS based engines. You can get them out of many different Dodge/Ram/Jeep vehicles.

For the Op, its not simple to swap any different make engine. I suggest you go out and do a lot of reading, as there are lots of resources on doing this swap into vehicles that did not come to them. Most of that information applies to any vehicle, so you don't have to find Jeep specific swap information.

I suppose it’s relevant to one’s perspective. I have a friend looking to get a JK and do a hemi swap. Seems some kits are junk and the one that isn’t is about $6k, not including the motor or labor. Figure 3-6k for a verified good, low mile (-50k) motor and it sure isn’t “cheap”. To some that probably isn’t much. To me it’s a fortune. *shrugs*

That's because you need an ECU that will integrate into the JK's existing computer, and all the systems (everything) that is controls, plus every mount that you need, lot of them come with a radiator and such too. It makes it a turn key system. In an FSJ, none of that matters. All you need is the ECU to run in stand alone.

So do people prefer to keep the TF727 (or TH400) or does the ECU allow the OD auto from the hemi to work too?

If you have the trans from the hemi, then all the gears will work as they should. If doing stand alone, you can use a 727. But not sure I would go through all the work to put a hemi in just to keep a 3sp auto.

Get the whole donor vehicle that way you have access to all the brackets, wiring harness...
There was a guy on youtube who was in an area where cars rust out fast and so he was able to pick up the whole thing cheap, he was taking the bodies off and leaving the floor pans then setting the new body on the cutting out the floor pan to fit the donor pan. Unfortunately living in the SW cars don't rust away otherwise My 52 L-110 would have a hemi!

Check out DIYhemi on you tube. He breaks the stock harness down to standalone. Use a 05 ram ECU. That's what I'm going to do in my 73 j2000.
