LS1 powered DeLorean

Post by The PIG Smith »

Okay, my last posting of a LS powered RX7 did not go over well here...
...let me try again with a LS1 power Delorean

The stock PRV ZMJ-159 V6 was weak at a 130HP
This LS1 should put the zip back in Doc Brown's ride.
Which brings up the question, with the LS1 sucking up all the extra room, is there any space remaining for Flux Capacitor? :D

The french V6 that the delorean came with was HORRIBLE. And He did wan't to put a V8 in it originally, but didn't work out.

Curious what he used for a transmission. I *REALLY* do not see the stock transmission holding up, it was marginal for the V6. But cool conversion for sure. Although my favorite conversion is actually the electric one. Its accelerates 3x faster than stock, and the electric bit just fits with that car.

When I lived in Reno there was a Deloran painted yellow that sat in the show room of a car lot... I heard a painted one is a sure sign of one with body damage. I always did like the look of them. Every year at the local Spokane Lilac Parade there are always three or four of them driving with their doors open. Next year, I'll snap a few pics.

I found some info on the original engine, the V6 PRV : the 1975 first version, which was in the Delorean, was indeed not very powerful and was criticized because of its uneven ignition timing and its vibrations at certain speeds, since it was a 90° V6 like some Buick engines and not the usual 60° V6. Actually originally the company planned to build V8 engines, so with a 90° angle between banks, but these were later scrapped in favor of a smaller and more fuel-efficient V6 after the 74 oil crisis .The ignition and vibrations issues were solved around 84, 85 by a new crankshaft with offset split crankpins.
More than 900,000 PRV were manufactured until 1997.
The turbo versions were actually powerful, the maximum power in a street car was 408hp in the bi-turbo Venturi 400 GT, not so bad.

According to wikipedia
- carbed 2.7L PRV : 131 hp
- injection 2.7L PRV : 142 hp
- injection 2.8L PRV, new crankshaft : 160 hp
- turbo 2.5L PRV : 180-205 hp
- injection 3.0L PRV : 170 hp
- turbo 3.0L PRV (Alpine A610) : 250-280 hp
- bi-turbo 3.0L PRV (Venturi 400) : 408 hp

I don't think it was that people didn't like a LS1 powered RX7. It's that they didn't like that it used a prefabbed kit. Some of us don't like kits.

Hmm I personally love kits. Takes all the difficulty out of a swap. And in the end it's about the end product, and enjoyment.

No, for me it was the act of putting a V8 into an RX7.

Ah, rotary fan. Nice engines, just to bad you have to check the oil at every gas fill up.

I had a friend who worked in a body shop, he painted a perfectly good Delorean Ferrari red. It looked good but the stainless was a better idea.
