Overdrive for the other car!

Post by will e »

Picked up this little gem:
Image

Gear vendors overdrive with a c6 tail shaft. I have been wanting one for the mustang for about ever...

You bolt it in place of the transmission tail shaft. Shorten the drive shaft a little and wire it up. When engauged it provides 23% overdrive in whichever gear you are in. My 3.50 gears will feel like 2.73. Great for highway driving.

It's for my ford mustang. 1973, 351C 4v, C6.

I have flipped back and forth on just going to a ford AOD. It's a pretty common swap. I would have to mess with making a TV cable that would work with my tripower.

The AOD has a slightly taller overdrive so it would drop my RPM's a little more. My 3.5 gears would feel like 2.73 or so as well.

One thing that 'sold' me on the gear vendors is I will get my passing gear back. When I am in 3rd 'over' at 65mph I can just shift my transmission to 2nd and this is a sweet spot in my torque range. Basically at a transratio of 1.14 (combined). With the AOD there is no sweet spot there, I go out of overdrive into 1.0. My car originally came with 2.78ish gears and while a little bit of a dog off the line it was fun to cruise and the passing gear was awesome.

So with the GV I have a little more flexibilty. I actually end up with 6 close ratio gears. I can go first/first over/second/second over/third/third over (2.46/1.92/1.46/1.14/1.0/.78)

We will see if it is all it is cracked up to be. They are very expensive new, I got this one for six and a half.

That's a good score. You don't even see them for sale used very often. I can't see trying to run it as a 6 spd but it will definitely be nice on the highway. I decided not to go that route because its not as efficient with a 3800 stall non lockup converter, as a manual trans.

Yeah 650. By the time I get whats missing and shorten the drive shaft I will probably be in it for twice that.

IIRC, it will still be less then a new OD.

Had a guy buy a new GV OD for his 'Yota, it was $1300 before shipping... :-bd
