Wild Burro Canyon this weekend, 3/1 (Tucson)

Hey all! Family and I will be camping at Picacho Peak this weekend. Found a trail I think we are going to wheel on Saturday...Wild Burro Canyon, about 45 minutes East of Picacho, just North of Catalina. Any of you ever wheeled it? Looks to be a there and back trail, and Wells says it's 2 hours round trip, which means 3-4 hours for us. Fairly flat out, then gets more challenging (medium difficulty?) at the end. Turn around and come back.

Anyone interested in joining us? Am thinking we'll probably start around 10ish on Saturday morning. If nobody is joining, we'll just go when we feel like it. If we have takers, we'll set a more specific time.

I do have to say that if Em is doing the predicted mandatory DOD overtime on Friday and Sunday I'm out.

It's listed as number 67 in the latest edition, though now that I look at it, it does have it marked as new for this edition (along with about 40 other new trails). Here's the info Wells has:

Overview: If you're short on time, but itching to do a little four wheeling, give this fun trail a try. The first two thirds cuts across a fairly flat area with many side washes to explore. The last section climbs into lo foothills and offers a short section of moderate rock crawling. Ends at an interesting dam and archaeological site. A great area for ATVs, UTVs and dirt bikes. Watch for mountain bikers. Carry a State Trust Land permit

Rating: Moderate: Easy road to Wpt. 03, where a steep rocky climb will test less aggressive SUVs. We managed it in our stock Grand Cherokee with careful tire placement and a good spotter.

Stats: Length: Just under 8 miles one way. Time: Allow about 2 hours for round trip. Elevation: 3,138 to 4,134 ft. Best time to go: Feb-May, Sept-Nov

Getting there: From the northeast side of Tucon, take Highway 77 about 8 miles north to town of Catalina. Turn left on Edwin Road just before Eagle Crest Ranch Boulevard.

Sounds fun for something new to see.
We'll see what happens with Em & work but a 2 hour run (they usually turn into 4) sound doable.

Yes, it does sound like we need one...I mailed my stuff in for it yesterday and hope they may get back to me by Friday. They do say they try and have fast turnaround for mail-in...but even I think it may be too ambitious a request from a government entity. Nevertheless, as hard as it is to find information on the trail, I don't think it will be very crowded or patrolled...we'll probably take our chances if it doesn't come in.

For what it's worth, everything I've searched for on Wild Burro Canyon just shows hiking trails up the other side. There are a bunch of trail heads for hiking that meet up, but this "back" route seems to be quite a bit less known.

Just called them to chat. They said they send out the permits the same day they get the form in. So I mailed mine yesterday, I should get it tomorrow. However, may be a little stickier for you Tucson folks. However, he did say I can head down to the office, so I'll do that for those who want. However, will need to know soon how many of you Tucson folks want one, and will need the forms by tomorrow. Need to also know if you want Family or Individual. Family covers two adults and children under 18.

Tad, will PM you my email addy for the form. In fact, you could even just pay in person on Saturday if you want too...up to you.

The new book has more trails than the old one. But some trails in the old book aren't in the new one. I don't think my favorite trail Sun flower mine is in the new one. But then again it is closed right now.

Putting stuff here so I can find it later.
From a mtb forum:

Take Edwin w to the cattle guard / windmill. Follow Crow Wash west for 1.5 miles or so until it boxes up. Take the ATV trail to your left. (Practically a highway now) Uphill and cross over the pass just south of the mine.

Downhill sw on a jeep road to a windmill ( solar panels now ) and cattle tank. Drop into upper Wild Burro Wash for a sandy but slightly downhill ride for a couple of miles to Alamo Springs. Make sure to look for a couple of small petroglyphs and metates at the slick rock waterfall area just before the cottonwood tree arch.

From Alamo Springs to the old stone line shack is mostly downhill for about .7 mile & you'll be carrying, not pushing your bike for about 1/2 of this distance
