Gas tank in place of spare tire?

Post by farmerjohnson »

Has anyone done this? I am thinking of using a xj gas tank and hang it between the frame rails. I have never been a fan of side saddle tanks.

well it's certainly possible to fab up some brackets and put an xj gas tank in there.

But I think that many folks who swap tanks use one from an 80's suburban as they pretty much fit right in and hold more gas.

The 91 S-10 TWO DOOR gas tank works well, too. See my sig link for details. But it's less capacity than the Sub tank.

What did you do for the fuel gauge?

Stock fuel gauge reads the same "direction". It's just off a bit. If you're really worried, you could put a resistor in-line, but I never did.

I am surprised the stock gauge works with the blazer sending unit (240-33 ohms).

After I posted I called autometer and was given two options to the 3316 sport comp gauche I bought., use sender 3262 or the programmable fuel gauge that retails for 129.

I do plan to use autometer gauges so no money wasted at this stage.

Mid-90's S10 tank here also, about 20 gallons.
Kind of skimpy but the pre-75 rigs have a different rear cross member that limits space so it's fine.
What did you do for the fuel gauge?
Mine has never worked, I have never cared.
After 120-140 miles, find gas soon.

In the middle of installing a 42 gallons tank from a 99 burb in my 79 J10 fits just about perfect and notched out in the front corners to clear shocks, going to cut a access flap in the bed to gain access to pump, only thing I'm not sure of is if the TBI fuel pressure regulator (adjustable ) will work will the vortac pump (a lot more pressure) wonder if anybody has done this before and if it works?

The pump does not make pressure, just flow, the fuel pressure regulator creates pressure so you should be fine.

What about using the 2 door Tahoe/Yukon tanks? They are 30 gallon tanks and by the measurements are a little smaller than the S10 tanks, except for the depth which is 14". I like the idea of 10 gal more fuel.

The next question would be, which pump would be used? A pump for the 5.7L Tahoe? A truck pump? Would the stock 5.7L pump work with the 5.3L wiring?

I wanted to throw that in there because I was getting ready to buy an S10 tank when I saw the Tahoe tank size and was curious why it isnt used more often. I understand it effects ground clearance in the rear, but I don't think it would hang down that low from the measurements I have taken on my Wagoneer.

I don't mean to take over your thread.

Don't sweat it. I'm curious to. It will help me decide which tank to go with.

The issue with the Tahoe ones is they hang way below the frame. A body lift lets you raise it, but then you have to deal with the issues of a body lift.

Ok, yea I measured under my Wag and it would put the bottom of the tank just above or right at the lowest point on my receiver hitch. I dont really want to fool with a body lift either.

I have found the 81-86 model Suburbans had a 25 gal tank which shows a depth of 10". The only issue is those were carb'd and not injection. Does that matter? I know it would mean the tank doesnt have baffles, but I have read that the baffles aren't a huge issue. Has anyone ran a tank for a carb set up with their vortec swaps?
Any idea of which fuel pump/sending unit would be needed?

Good point. No I wasn't going to and hadn't looked at where it came in at. I was looking at deminsions. I just hate that the S10 tank is 20 gallons. We plan on driving long distances, but I think Im gonna have to give in and go with what has been proven to work.
Thanks for pointing that out.

I am with ya, it would be nice for at least 25 gallons, there is the 40+ gallon Suburban tank with more work.

I will be 50 in a few days, 300 miles between whizzes is a stretch so I don't worry about it so much :P

Haha, yea I dont want to get far enough into it to do a 40 gal.
When my wife is with me we have to stop about every 150mi anyway... so 20gal will work if it has to.
