I have been working on the wiring harness of my '80 Cherk. I have decided that while I am in there I am going to upgrade the alternator. It's not going to be the typical CS144 though. I am going to do the Ford 3G. It's puts out 135a and 95a at idle...should be PLENTY. AND it's just as easy to wire in as a CS144. Here is a comparison of size next to a Delco.
I am also going to be putting in a power junction block. Then I will shorten the main power feed put a fusible link on it and run the Alternator output directly to it(4g). Then with a 8/10g I will run from the junction block back to the battery...the alternator isnt there to charge the battery,it's to power the vehicle AFTER it is started...but it does top off the battery once running.
