Followup Question to the "What FITS and What HITS.... Lift / Tire Combos"

Post by The PIG Smith »

On the 'Mothership", in the Tech Archives, Suspension and Lifts, there is a Topic of the Month (TOM) that Todd started in October 2001 titled,
What FITS and What HITS.... Lift / Tire Combos

This is mostly about what tire and lift combinations works on Wagoneers and narrow track (N/T) Cherokees.
There are a few notations about W/T rigs, but the blanket statement given is:
"W/T and J Series pickups usually can use the same lift with one size bigger of a tire."

Sadly, this reference is not helping me plan for my J10 project.
If there better reference, please share it with me and I will shut up and slither back under my rock.

Tire Purchase is driving all of my madness.
I am wanting to install a 4" lift on my J10.
I am am struggling with staying with my OE 15" slotted mag wheels or aftermarket 16" wheels.
More importantly, tire size:
31" or 33"
10.50 or 12.50?

I ran 31" BFG's with a 4" 'Rusty off road' spring lift and it worked great. A little bit of inner well rubbing on the back tires but it was occasional and didn't cause any damage.

Thank you Will.
What width tire did you run, 10.50 or 12.50?
Would you recommend that size if your was to pull, double duty as a Winter Daily Driver?

31x10.50x15s on the factory aluminum slots worked great on my 74 narrow track with stock-semi-tired suspension. No rubbing or deterioration of turning radius.

On my '67 J3600 I have 31x10.5x15s with worn out suspension, not sure on backspacing of wheels. '87 Grand Wagoneer, 4" Rusty's lift 31x10.50x15 stock wheels, had to turn steering stop out about a 1/8 of a turn.

I ran 31x10.50 BFG AT tires on 5 slot wheels on a stock J10. No lift. No rub. No problems.

When I swapped in the J20 axles, I lifted 4" and put 315/75R16 (35x12.50) tires on. I don't wheel the truck but it drives down the road with no lift, no rub, no problem. 33x10.50 tires will fit just fine on the stock 5 slot and fit just fine with a 4" lift. If you want to go with the more common 33x12.50R15 (or 305/70R16), you'll need aftermarket wheels that are wider than the factory 5 slot. For reference, my wheels are American Racing AR23 wheels. The ones in the picture are 8 lug for the J20 axles but you can get them in 6 lug for a standard J10.

I've been considering a set of Alcan 6" springs to better clear the tires when I do take it off road however.

Check out my gear ratio calculator

If you can't fix it with a hammer or duct tape you have an electrical problem.

I run Goodyear All-Terrain Adventures -- 31x10.5x15, on a (otherwise bone-stock) 1990 GW with 3" Alcan springs. Rubs the inner fender ever-so-slightly when turned fully to the left (but not the right). Just need to adjust my wheel stop a 1/4 turn, but I'm too lazy to do it.
1990 GW with HD towing package -- everything works! (today, anyway)

 Did you ever get it flexed out? Do you have any pictures running that set up?
