Re: 1965 S'Wagoneer Build

I score a brand new exhaust set up from the wrecking yard off a 76 Wagoneer. Glass Pack muffler. I installed it this AM. I'd prefer dual exhaust, but the price was right on it!

Image

I also found another vacuum leak and sealed it up. I put an angled chrome tip on it to direct the condensation away from the walls and other jeeps and saw this last generation ford bronco at the parts store:

22 schools are still without power and another 12, or so lack phone service. So I am off work tomorrow, too.

Is that the affected area? What is that image?

That's an outline of a local lake in North Idaho called Priest Lake. It was something I cooked up in my spare time during the recent storm.

I just threw in the pic for grins, it has nothing to really do with the recent storm. Sorry for the confusion.

I've got today off. They're going to have us make up the days as snow days, so I'll eventually get paid. I took the kids to school and picked them up, and the area still looks like crap.

Now add about 2" of snow to those pics.

Just found this & got caught up. The wag is looking good, I love the rims. I'm glad to see it getting out and about instead of sitting in my side yard. Keep up the good work.

1965 S'Wagoneer Build

Post by 66stepside »

Hey, thanks. Just tinkering here and there- I appreciate you checking in!

I've been adjusting the timing and chasing an occasional rough idle. The carb settled down once I hooked up the electric choke, but she still ran a bit rich, eventually making my eyes water.

So, after a few rounds, I just swapped in a spare Holly 2 bbl 500 cfm I had as back up for the panel delivery.

Adjusting that Holly was easier that the 2 bbl motorcraft.

Image

After a couple of neighborhood runs, and minor adjustments, she seems dialed in pretty good. I don't want to put too much into her now as I am not sure what she will have for a drivetrain when I get to that point. I did instal a manual choke cable for it, too.

I fired up the pellet stove and poked around the sash O' parts and found a usable set of chrome trim rings for the instrument cluster and speaker hole for the 65.

They cleaned up nice and usable with some elbow grease:

Some boogers, but not to many.

I also cleaned up a spare wire mesh screen:

It's now a question of taking off the ones on the 65 without causing damage- always easier said than done.

Do you still have this Wag? I noticed you sold the panel but what about this one? Just curious.

1965 S'Wagoneer Build

Post by 66stepside »

Thanks for asking, Lol, yep. It sold.

A serious case of ADHD? I couldn't justify having the Wagoneer while also having the panel.

The panel was for sale when I bought the S'wag. I thought the swag would replace the panel when it sold. The panel did not sale. A member talked me into giving the panel some time, so I figured if I kept working on her, I'd get over the whole trapped-underneath-her-issue. That never really happened. So when I was offered a fair price for the swag, I sold it- only to later sell off the panel.

Crazy, right? Lol, I'd blame it on my ADD, but I don't have that- just a crazy jeep addiction.

I did put the money from the sale of the jeeps toward a small business I started last January.

I see. I really dug the color and feel of that truck. The color reminded me of a 77 Cherokee NT I had at one point. Is the another Wagoneer or Cherokee in your future or are you standing pat with the J truck for now and that cool stepside you guys are working on?

I did like the Wagoneer, the color, look and feel of it was super cool. It would've been a keeper for sure.

I would always be looking for another Wagoneer. My daughter wants the wrangler when she starts driving, so if that happens I'll need another daily driver. So I am always hopeful there is another jeep in the future.

Until the right one pops up, though, we're on track to stick with what we have.

I might be looking at a 60's wag this weekend. I am just waiting on a call back from the owner. The jeep was her grandfathers- he was the original owner.

Sounds good. A 60s Wag could mean many things!

Lol, yeah. She actually just got back to me about going to see it.

I have no expecatations about a "new" Wagoneer one way, or another.

There's a 91 Wagoneer for sale locally, but also on eBay, but it's way out of my budget.

It's kind of a bummer the swag is gone- even my daughter was bummed! The 68 I am looking at tomorrow might replace it, or not. If I am looking for one one build, it has to be the right one for sure.

Thanks for the compliment!

1965 S'Wagoneer Build

Post by 66stepside »

It's a 1968 Wagoneer base model- 1414.

Image

Inline 232 engine, T-86 three speed, column shift "three on the tree" with the standard Dana 20 t case. It was his dad's- bought new in '68 in Montana and the son got it after his dad passed away 18 years ago. There was a twin- the dad bought two; the other was an automatic and it was the wife's ride. The automatic version went to the daughter and it is still in Montana.

The shifter linkage on the column shift is bound up somewhere and it's been sitting since 2010. Up until then, it was a daily driver. The odometer shows 85,345 miles.

Image

Image

It was originally Bronze Mist Metallic, or so it looks, but was repainted an unknown color sometime in the early 1980's. There doesn't seem to be any rust in the rockers, or rear quarters, but the floor boards seem soft. The driver's front fender has a dent, but overall, it is as original and unrestored a Wagoneer as I've ever seen.

All things factored in, now that I know she's a 66. I am going to pull the trigger and scoop her up.
