Good to know- I always post the vin pics for you Mud89! Merci.

All things factored in, now that I know she's a 66. I am going to pull the trigger and scoop her up.

The interior shows typical wear for it's age- everything is there- the rubber factory flooring looks mint.

The title does say 68, so she must've sat on the lot for a bit before she sold back in the day.

I'll be heading out in the AM and bringing her home via tow dolly.

1966 (1968?) Wagoneer Build

Post by 66stepside »

Well, she was stuck in gear, so I dropped the rear driveline. It was an uneventful ride home.

She does need a serious bath- inside and out.

She'll dry out in the garage, get cleaned up, then slowly be brought back to life. My hope is to keep her all stock.

Edit for the engine bay:

I think she was Copper Brown Metallic on the exterior, Amber Poly on the interior.

Another edit:

I think the shifting problem is in the column- another column might be in order.

I'm in awe of all the original literature that was with the truck. Amazing. And holy freaking bees' nest! Overall, it's amazing to me when I see a Jeep with no rust in all the places where i usually see rust. From what is visible in the photos, the inner fenders look especially clean. I also enjoy seeing the 232 (not technically a 258, right?) with that valve cover. I'm a huge AMC fan but it's neat to see it not in blue.

The literature was a cool bonus. It still has the original jeep logo'd key, too. There were still quite a few of those bees, spiders and misc. bugs still kicking. I've already replaced the tail light lens- after it was cleaned out. We found a nice pair of Minolta binoculars under the front seat, too.

Overall, there's really minimal rust in the rear quarters, rockers, or tailgate. I am sure I'll find some when I dig into her, though. Yep, it's a 232. I've heard it's similar to the 258 in terms of upgrades and mods.

I think the steering column seems to be broken inside the column. I do have a spare manual shifting column, but it's black. It also must've come off a Custom wag, as it has a chrome turn signal lever and the shifter is also chromed.

Before anything else, I need to fire her up and see what happens. I changed the oil already. I still need to drain the gas tank and refill it with some fresh mid-grade, check the wiring. It was nice to see the brake fluid res. with some fluid there- it was nearly empty, so I topped that off. All in all, it was a good day.

Everything looks stock except the tires and wheel covers, cool original paperworks ;-) , copyright of this owner manual should be 1965, which is consistent with a '66, anything with a "delivery date" ?

There was nothing in the glove box about any of the purchase info- but a bunch of receipts from over the years about new tires, oil changes, brake work, tune ups and the like.

I'll check the date of the carb brochure, owner's manual, and the accessory info for publication dates.

1966 (1968?) Wagoneer Build

Post by 66stepside »

The 3/4 of the print dates present indicated "1965", one indicates "66".

So I am fairly confidant she's actually a 66 like you said. One brochure has no date, but depicts a 63-65 Wagoneer taillight assembly in one important pic.

I've sprayed mystery oil in each cylinder, the plugs seem a bit fouled, but I just checked/adjusted the gaps and put them back in as they'll get fouled no mater what happens next. I'll be draining the gas tank next using an electric fuel pump, then fill her up with a few fresh gallons of gas. The battery is charging now. I'm going to install the battery to check the battery, starter and misc connections before initial start up.
Oh, I also painted the spare steering column off white, flat, and that will get installed over the Thanksgiving holiday. Three of the tires are flat now, so I'll put on the studded snow tires I had left over from a previous build.

The stock radio picks up one station, and even the horn works, haha.

After considerable time and energy as well as help from the tech section of the forum, she's purring like a kitten. I installed new points, condenser and spark plugs.

More importantly, or so my gut tell me, I used a bit of dialectic grease on the bottom plate where it makes contact with the distributor housing. Just a tiny bit at the three points of contact to ensure a proper ground. I also used a bit of the same grease where the coil and condenser are screwed together.

All in all, maybe it was just the points, or condenser, though. It's right st 950 rpm, I think that's a bit too high.

The clutch works! Now on to the shifter column.

I've built lifted, lowered, restomods, jeep-parts-only, SBC-powered jeeps, so it's about time I try my hand at an all stock build. Thanks!

Edit:

What are the odds I hit up the wrecking yard and find an Amber Poly three on the tree shifting steering column off a FSJ?

Image

Obviously the odds are pretty good today. I was able to shift through all the gears on the t-86 three speed still mated to the 327. Weird thing is it doesn't have that black box thingy-ma-jiggy on it like the others.
