Why would my fuel tank have 2 sending units. I'm working on a 79 jeep j10. Pulled the tank out to clean it and there is the pickup tube with what looks like a arm that would have had a float on it "broken off" that is attached to a variable resistor. And directly in front of that is a sending unit, no pickup tube but it has a float. What's up with that?
The pick up tube has been replaced at some time or another.
Newer pick up tubes have a point on them where a sender should have gone, but is not there.
I think they just make one type of unit, then add the sender / float assembly to it if that particular vehicle had one? I know this as I just recently ordered both sender, and a pick up tube from BJ's.
If God is your co-pilot, you need to switch seats!
Back in the dark days, late 80s early 90s it was impossible to get a lot of parts for these rigs. It is quit possible po grabbed what ever fit the hole and made it work.
79 Cherokee WT QT Golden Eagle white with gold windows "Pigger" only blows hubs the night before a road trip or the clodest night of year. Has only been towed cause of stupid.

The Wag/Chero tanks are the exact same way. The aftermarket pick up tubes have the spot for a sender but no arm. I'm assuming the same goes for the J-trucks. I just replaced mine and it was the same as you describe.

Sounds like the Previous Owner cut a hole and installed an aftermarket sending unit because (like Cheap Hobby suggested) he couldn't find the correct sending unit/pickup tube to replace his broken one with.
