Question: Vibration Dampener Clearance

Post by JeepFleetAdmiral »

Replacing the vibration dampener.
I have used a proper damper install tool, oiled everythinguup prior to cranking, cranked until it was tight, threaded in the bolt, and torqued to 90ft/lbs as I found indicated in my Chilton's.
Assuming that was all done properly, what sort of clearance should I see behind the dampener, between it and the timing cover?
I am currently seeing about 1/4" give or take. Quite a lot, I'd think. Other balancers I've installed on other vehicles have been barely a hair from the engine.

Which engine do you have? I can think of five different engine families offhand.

If you have an AMC V8 (most common engine), I believe the back side of the pully should be about 1 1/8" from the oil pan. You can also check to see if the pull notches line up with the other pulleys.

258 i6's have the damper almost touching the timing cover. Those are very close.
